I think today was the first day this year that I managed to go on a stroll again. My negativity bias is shocked that it took almost two months, but I hope it'll be the first step of progress.

So, here's a question that I can't really check on myself: How well does #ChatGPT work in your/not-so-common/non-Western language(s)?

For me, it works way better than Google and Deepl for translating English to German, but it already falls a bit short in German when “talking” about rhymes or puns. Grammar is very on-point, though.

So I'm wondering: how well does it work with smaller languages like Finnish and Swahili or big non-Western ones like Japanese, Chinese or Arabic?

All to improve the efficiency of Sending, and eke out a little more information from each scarce spell slot. How much additional information can you add if you start experimenting with tones?

I'm just imagining the æther-messengers of the Imperial Bureaucratic Service constructing Sendings with all the comprehensibility of a dialup modem sound, and blasting out whole paragraphs of information to someone on the other end who has Keen Mind and has to spend an hour with a diabolical grammar and particle reference translating this data-pulse back into the trade tongue.

One of the (main?) reasons why we still remember philosophers from ancient Greece: They had time to think, converse, discuss and articulate. They had this time because the ideal citizen (= free man) didn't work, or at least not hard. They had slaves to do that.

We could, at least partly, have the same luxury today. Even without the moral concerns! We have #technology: robots, algorithms, “#AI”.

Imagine if we had built societal systems where people rejoiced that those took over their labour.

Today I learned: There's a current scientific best practice to cook rice when it comes to the endpoints “removal of pollutants” and “preserving nutrients/minerals”.

TL;DR: Cook rice with excess water (ratio about 1:4) for about five minutes, drain and discard the water, add fresh water (typical ratio for full absorption), bring to a boil and cool for the remaining time.

Apparently, this is more effective than washing and soaking. Method works for brown and white rice.

For each, I plan to make one post a month with a small change that might help someone in regards to two areas I feel reasonably comfortable in.

As we slowly get into "New Year's resolutions" territory, (gradually) moving away from GMail might be a low-hanging fruit for many of you.

I've made similiar experiences as @siguza (https://infosec.exchange/@siguza/111571416691680700) in the past: Regular mails from my domains have been blocked or hidden, never to be seen by the people I sent them.

E-mail is an open & decentralised infrastructure. But if one provider hosts like 90% of private accounts, it's really not.

Bonus: think about privacy and "AI".
