It’s not summer yet, but more than 17 million people in the western United States are already under excessive heat warnings as temperatures climb 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above average, with large swaths of California expecting to see thermometers hit 108F (42.2C). Meteorologists are saying the scorching weather is caused by a heat dome, when high pressure traps heat over an area, making it hotter the longer it lasts. The BBC has more.

Donald Trump has been found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, and will be sentenced on July 11. MSNBC's Katie Phang looks at the "novel legal theory" prosecutor Alvin Bragg chose to employ in this trial. "It’s important to take a minute to digest what the prosecution had to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt: Trump, with the intent to defraud, made (or caused to be made) false entries in an enterprise’s business records, and his 'intent to defraud included an intent to commit another crime or to aid or conceal the commission thereof,'" Phang writes.

Papua New Guinea says Friday’s landslide buried more than 2,000 people and formally asks for help.

AP reports: "Determining the scale of the disaster is difficult because of challenging conditions on the ground, including the village’s remote location, a lack of telecommunications and tribal warfare throughout the province which means international relief workers and aid convoys require military escorts."

More than 200 million people in the world people have schistosomiasis, a parasitic worm that lodges itself in blood vessels, causes organ damage and diminishes learning ability if left untreated. Experts say 50 million young children are at risk, mostly in Africa. An effective treatment, a pill called praziquantel, is available to adults and school-aged children but has been complicated to dose for anyone younger. A version of the drug for preschoolers is in the works, but distributing it won’t be a straight-forward task. NPR has more.
