Finally a scintilla of sanity around Bozo's p**s take of an honours list. The whole system is utterly corrupt and should be removed or replaced with a system that is apolitical. If you have to have them have honours awarded by an independent body of non-politicians.

@mistakenotmy @jkfanghanel @simonproven why not - they are already in bed with the Tories in Scotland.

bullivant, to random

Starmer is now writing comment pieces for the Express, thereby validating it's fact free approach to the news. This is not good. He has really jumped the shark.

Here's an excerpt. "So let me spell it out simply. Britain's future is outside the EU. Not in the single market, not in the customs union, not with a return to freedom of movement..."

I will NOT be voting Labour at the next election.

@bullivant @IndyRichard believe the SNP’s problems are more wishful thinking. Support is up, membership is up, auditors in place, new Governance in place and according to polls last week support for Indy back at 53%. It will be difficult to convince any pro Indy voter to vote for a pro-unionist Labour Party and one where Starmer has expressed his view that even if SNP are the majority in Scotland he will ignore them.

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@bullivant @IndyRichard @harriettmb oh yes. Best bedfellows these days. Scottish council voting is STV which means councils typically are coalitions. Labour joined up with Tories to ensure the largest party (often SNP) did not get control. They refused to also work with the Greens. Labour even went as far as suspending two Lab Councillors who refused to work with the Tories.

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@JohnLoader6 @IndyRichard @harriettmb @bullivant John in Scotland they are very much in partnership with the Tories. They have been since last year (our council elections were held in 2022).

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@JohnLoader6 @bullivant can he be trusted? From Scotland I’d say an emphatic No.

What happened in #turkey is a lesson that authortriasm still runs a mock and is spreading like a pesticide and the fight is far from over. We need to stay informed turn off media pundits since 24 hour news is destroying democracy as a whole social media is adding fuel to the fire lowering people's attention spans. The best way to fight back is to elect politicians who aren't online as much like Joe Biden and who are committed to keeping democracy in tact. Erdogan's opponent was suppressed from tweeting the day before the election because Musk was concerned about authortrians losing their grip and unfortunately it worked along with voter suppression and manufacturered crises.

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@alfredo_liberal Erdogan was going to win without Musk’s help. He has long understood that bread-and-butter issues motivate Turkish voters above all else. In the past year he has made cheap housing loans and implemented a debt-relief program for millions of Turks. Six months before the election he passed a law allowing >2 million Turks to retire immediately. Boosting wages has also been a priority. Voters tend to care less about rampant inflation when they are getting help

I am glad that our FM has spoken about his experience as a Scot of Pakistani heritage being on the receiving end of racism. Despite bring a law abiding citizen he has been stopped & searched by the police many times for no reason other than the colour of his skin. Shameful as these incidents are we in Scotland need to face up to them & stop sweeping them under the carpet.

@ScepticalScot1 it’s very real. My son in law is black. He worked hours past his shift (he’s a Dr), was too late for the bus and got stopped walking down the road. I was on my way to pick him up and saw him get physically manhandled. Police were very rude when I stopped. Only when I mentioned not only was I his mother-in-law, but a solicitor, and asked for their names and shoulder number did they shit themselves.

    @therobburgessshow nazi ideology didn’t appear out of thin air. They studied the USA, in particular the Jim Crow era and nationality laws and developed them to meet their own end. Hitler himself, in Mein Kampf described the US as ‘the one state’ that had made progress toward the creation of a healthy racist society. The USA today is not learning from the Nazis as the USA has always been a troubled nation and a hot bed of the far right who just went underground in the mid 60s.

He’s less acerbic so appeals to traditional Tory voters, she’s the attack dog appealing to hard right voters. I don’t believe he’ll remain as leader after the GE as his ambition was to network on the world stage. Braverman and Badenoch will fight for leadership. But who knows….anything is possible with this lot. And if I’m honest I have zero confidence in Labour.

    It frustrates me how much political rhetoric on Mastodon just blames economists.

    If you actually listen to economists--instead of media and politicians--they advise cash for the poor; high taxes on wealth hoarding; massive investments in education, basic research, public infrastructure, etc.

    But policymakers don't listen to them. They listen to donors and voters. And media rarely ask economists where we should invest, they ask them whether a recession is coming.

    In many countries we having problems with our police. Murder, rape, sharing images of crime scenes, institutional racism, misogyny or most recent example, police tasering a 95 year old woman. All of this before we speak of political role of the police.
    Is too much power entrusted to the police? Why are so many recruits so lacking in common human decency and in intelligence? Should we restrict the statute book to make things simpler for the police? Without respect how can policing work?
    #Police

    Lassielmr,
    @Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

    @onepict @IndyRichard I agree. There is no reason why, at the recruitment stage, we should be able to identify such people. Almost all the “psychological tests” that the police use are complete and utter bullshit and as a result the power hungry get recruited.

    The Nazis did not successfully murder millions because every German was a Nazi. They succeeded because not enough Germans were anti-Nazi.

    You have the power to stop it from happening again. All it takes is the willingness to stand up and fight.

    Lassielmr,
    @Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

    @ieatkillerbees @robertnorlyn where do you think the Nazi’s got their ideas from? They studied the Crow era laws and other discrimination in the USA, which was the most racist and discriminatory nation in the world in the early 20th century. They took US laws, developed them and when in power gradually implented them. Nazi ideology was developed in the 1920s, it just didn’t appear out of thin air in the 1930s.

    More new mothers die in the US than in any other rich country. Several times over. The US has a maternal mortality crisis. ...

    Giving birth in the US is insanely expensive ...

    America remains one of exactly two countries that don’t mandate maternity leave ...

    A lack of accessible healthcare

    The cost of childcare in America is astounding. ...

    @WillRobinson my daughter gave birth to her son on Friday. It was a high risk birth and she was admitted to hospital a week ago for monitoring, resulting in an emergency section. Cost to her at point of use - zero. She, her husband and the rest of our society pay tax which contributes to all in society. Universal healthcare has it’s challenges but when push comes to shove lives are saved and no-one is left bankrupt
