It is the right of the Scottish people to determine our own future. Whether on EU membership, whether or not we want a monarchy, whether we want nukes on Scottish soil, whether we want to retain and expand our publicly owned NHS and more.
Why should we vote to continue London rule and being told what we can and cannot do?

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@CloudyMrs @argv_minus_one @ginger_tosser Would Scotland be in breach of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty if we tried to keep the nukes after independence? Not that we'd want these weapons on our soil in the first place.

Labour voted for the Iraq War which killed more than a million people. Labour give Israel the green light to do as they please and to kill as many Palestinians as they can.
We should open our eyes to what a right wing Labour Party stands for.

Sunak or Starmer? Wow what a choice. To paraphrase a quote from Facebook, it like changing your shirt when you have shat in your trousers.
Scotland can do so much better than the red or blue Tories

Remind any of your friends considering voting Labour in Scotland ...

"LABOUR MPS HAVE ACCEPTED OVER £280,000 FROM ISRAEL LOBBY

Twenty percent of Labour’s sitting MPs have been funded by pro-Israel groups or individuals – including 15 who have been directly funded by the Israeli state."

What is the Israeli State getting in return? Isn't it an MPs job to represent their constituents?

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@russellt When Scotland voted Labour we were called the sick man of Europe and 1 in 5 of the Scottish people lived in poverty. We voted Labour for 14 General elections and for 56 years in a row. Don't go back to Labour. They absolutely do not deserve another chance.

So a General Election been called at long last. For everyone in Scotland wondering if our opinion matters just look at the date of the election for a wee clue. 4th July is in middle of Scottish School summer holiday while avoiding the English summer holiday.

Ireland, Norway and Spain have said they will recognise Palestine as an independent state. Predictably, Israel throws their toys out of the pram.

What all the countries who give Israel unconditional support don't seem to get is that doing the same things we have done for 70 odd years will not bring about peace. Peace will not come through dropping more bombs. I hope more countries recognise Palestine.

The majority of the people of Scotland do not subscribe to any religion, we don't support Scotland's continued place in the United Kingdom, we don't support the monarchy. We are not the same as the people south of our border. We have our own beliefs. Can anyone explain why it is acceptable for those beliefs from south of the border to be imposed upon us?
The people of Scotland should, and I believe, will, find our own path.

ULEZ discussion.
Firstly, I sometimes feel that anyone who questions electric vehicles or things such as ULEZ zones is labelled as climate denier or even worse as a Tory. Neither of these things are true.
Edinburgh ULEz is my closest zone. I can see the befit for pedestrians from better air quality but wonder if there are better ways to produce the same outcome. My main concern is that ULEZ seems to punish people with older vehicles. Many do not have the money to purchase something newer 1/2

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

Is there a better way to promote public transport rather than ULEZ which focuses on the private car. I am starting to think that private car ownership is the issue much more than the age of vehicles. A ULEZ which encourages scrapping of perfectly serviceable vehicles is hardly environmentally friendly.
These are the things we shouldn't just accept but need to discuss. 2/2

IndyRichard, to climate
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

The simple facts of climate change which politicians seem not to get.

  1. Climate change is real.
  2. Climate change is with us today.
  3. We can’t solve the problems of climate change with the same thinking that created these problems.
ChrisMayLA6, to disability
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

Across the political Right, the narrative is that disability benefits (primarily Personal Independence Payments; PIPs) are too easy to get & are often paid to the 'undeserving'... however, in reality nearly half of applicants are rejected, rising to over two thirds for endometriosis (a gendered dimension I'll leave you to ponder), but with high rates of rejections over-turned on appeal (often with the same evidence).

More Tory lies, callousness & inhumanity

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 It says much that the far right think disability payments are "easy" to get. We put in many claims over the years for our son who will need 24x7 care for rest of his life. Once DWP decided to stop his payments while they considered a change in circumstance. That change was leaving school. They thought about this for 5 months leaving son with no money for rent, food, heating, clothing and having to survive on charity. I hate how our society picks on those at the bottom.

The choice at General Election in Scotland is very clear.
Vote Tory. We all know what they stand for.
Vote Labour. For everything the Tories stand for plus undoing Scotland's free prescriptions and higher education.
Or vote to free ourselves from London rule.

I read interesting point asking how many Councillors might the Green Party have won if BBC had given them half the coverage they gave to Reform?
It a good point. Similarly here in Scotland, how high might independence have polled in 2014 had BBC been fair and balanced?

@adrianfry@mastodon.scot avatar

Reading the news this morning makes me wonder how any rational person can interpret 's actions as anything other than a mission to kill as many people as possible.

This is without any doubt whatsoever yet the focus is not upon preventing this, but preventing demonstrations against it.

I despair.

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@adrianfry Well said. I am disgusted and dismayed in equal parts by the UK government and the official opposition who tip toe around, doing anything they can to avoid upsetting the Israeli Government. Many other governments in the west seem to be playing the same game. It seems that lives of Palestinians have no value to any of them.

IndyRichard, to random

Can anyone explain why this is acceptable?

IndyRichard, to random
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

What is first thing you want to change after Scotland's Independence Day? I don't mean the change Labour go on about which seems to mean carrying on with the Tory project. No I mean real change relevant for the Scottish people which we can't do as a small part of Westminster.

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat I don't disagree with any of that.
I'd add ditch nuclear weapons.
Decentralisation of power so that Parliament moves around and committees based outside central belt.
Oh and look at who owns our press.
And look at the list vote and MSP who spend career in Parliament never having won a vote.

Whenever politicians or the press from south of the border attack Scotland and tell us how to run our affairs, it not about us being a drain or not being a drain, having a better NHS or them attacking our NHS, how each government responded to Covid or a hundred other things. All it is about is our colonial masters reminding us that they are in charge and we better not consider leaving.

IndyRichard, to random

Press bias in Scotland.
Well over 95% of the paper press available in Scotland support continued London rule and the Union. This number grows if I include local papers. Then add in TV and Radio. There is a huge bias in the media available here in Scotland.
Take this into account with every attack on Scotland, on our history and culture and our government and then laugh that despite this massive one-sided propaganda campaign, more than 50% of us still want independence.

IndyRichard, to random
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

Today and probably for weeks the news will be full of an endless queue of politicians and press telling the people of Scotland how we should run our affairs. The vast vast majority of these people will be English and will never have lived or worked in Scotland. Can anyone see why the desire for independence doesn't fall?

Why is the media describing Stormy Daniels as as "adult porn star"? Does America have a lot of child porn stars?

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke You make a good point. I wonder if people sit in offices and ponder which terms are the least harmful for their clients. As example, I have never heard Stormy Daniels be described as a sex worker in relation to Trump. I wonder why..?

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke What shocks me is similarity between how press treat Trump and how they treat Boris Johnson. Who asks questions about why Trump is paying for sex? Similarly where is outrage that Johnson was having sex on sofa with new partner while his wife undergoing cancer care. Do press avoid it because the obvious conclusion that these men are unfit for positions of high office?

A truly shocking statement from Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party and likely next Prime Minister. He has said that "Labour is now the true party of English patriotism. I have no time for those who flinch at our flag. The cross of St George belongs to all who love this country."
For everyone who isn't English this is a glimpse of what the UK will be like under Starmer. We are sleepwalking towards a very dark place.
Don't vote Tory.
Don't vote Labour.

3 questions on Brexit. Where are these mythical 'sunlit uplands' we were promised? If Brexit such an obvious failure, why are the Tories and Labour still afraid to admit that it is an obvious failure? Lastly if the Tories and Labour so out of step with both reality and the truth, why should any of us vote for them?
