What is first thing you want to change after Scotland's Independence Day? I don't mean the change Labour go on about which seems to mean carrying on with the Tory project. No I mean real change relevant for the Scottish people which we can't do as a small part of Westminster.

@IndyRichard Nationalisation of energy generation.
Land reform and break up of big estates.
Reform of emigration to encourage and welcome incomers.
Banning of corporate lobbying in parliament.

@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@Indyposterboy @IndyRichard @alexlac51 that’s a start…

@IndyRichard decentralisation and greater powers for regions, universal basic income, nationalise energy, stop issue of exploration licences, re-establish strong ties with EU again, eventually rejoining, having a fair and humane immigration policy, having a simple and inexpensive route to citizenship, serious land reform, rent controls, electoral reform - none of this sitting in Parliament for years on the back of a 5% regional vote - raise the bar, major transport infrastructure program

@IndyRichard I think the first changes I'd want would be:

  1. Real redistribution of land to communities #LandReform;
  2. Systematic advantaging of workers' co-ops over companies limited by share in public contracts and in taxation;
  3. Reform of local government (and of local taxation) resulting in at minimum a five-fold increase in number of councils, with each deriving the majority of its revenue from its own taxation;
  4. Decentralising of real power from Holyrood to local government.

@IndyRichard The first thing would be to rejoin the EU (ie open negotiations to rejoin the EU, the single market and the customs union).

Everything else is secondary.

@djm_black @IndyRichard

Well I think you need to be an independent country first and then go through the 5 year fiscal analysis to rejoin I think. It's why Croatia was in a long queue, Bosnia and Hercegovina are next in the process I think

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@jaybhatt @djm_black @IndyRichard There is no queue and as for Croatia, I was part of the EU legal team providing support to the Croatian Gov in preparation for joining. Croatia was starting from zero regarding meeting Copenhagen Criteria and had issues with Judicial reform and human rights, challenges with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, long-standing border disputes with Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro & Slovenia. 1/

@IndyRichard
Back to the EU.
Renewed commitment to the ECHR.
A yearly Independence Day public holiday.
Land reform. Urgently.
No more cold or hungry Scots.
Legislation to prevent another 'voluntary union'.
englandshire to be kept on a short leash until they sort themselves out.

IndyRichard,
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat I don't disagree with any of that.
I'd add ditch nuclear weapons.
Decentralisation of power so that Parliament moves around and committees based outside central belt.
Oh and look at who owns our press.
And look at the list vote and MSP who spend career in Parliament never having won a vote.

JackTheCat,
@JackTheCat@mastodon.scot avatar

@IndyRichard PS DEFINITELY get rid of List spongers. Limited time posts based on actual contributions. Sitting on your arse doing nothing? Oot ye go.

@JackTheCat @IndyRichard I can appreciate the sentiment, but it does provide some balance in representation.

Of course it was intended to prevent majorities not to increase cooperation but to prevent Westminster being upstaged.

A properly proportional system would be better - wirh some minimum threshold for support.

@JackTheCat
So a return to constituency safe seat spongers like Westminster?

The problem isn't the list system, its the political parties that put those candidates in place.

@IndyRichard @Indyposterboy

Lassielmr,
@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@adrinux @JackTheCat @IndyRichard @Indyposterboy you raise the bar - there is no need for FPTP. D’Hondt is flawed. You adopt a PR system which sets a higher % of votes needed. The current 5% of regional votes to become a professional seat warmer was designed by the Lab Gov to ensure they filled up Holyrood and kept everyone else at bay. It backfired for them. We have regional MSPs who have sat on their ass for 25yrs without contributing to any debate. That is wrong.
