One for my old BGM Buddies today

“I’d like Smooth Pop 10, Chart Hits 36 & Instrumental Piano pls”

Found a few DATs & CDi Audio Discs. DAT is dated March ‘92. Lettered A to H. Therefore DAT Masters for the 8 Bands on CDi Audio, to be pressed up at Nimbus.

Anyone got an M810?

@avavsystems Can you explain what 'professional CD' is - and how did it squeeze 8 hours on?

I haven't paid attention to Netcraft's Web Server Survey, which was once a battlefield between Linux and Microsoft (namely Apache httpd vs Microsoft IIS).

Nginx took the lead from Apache in 2019. However, for the past 3 years Nginx's market share has been on a steady decline, matched by the growth of Cloudflare (10%) and "Other" (25%). Is Amazon AWS lumped with it?

@dick_turpin what are the two beige blobs at top upper-right of your plate - just above the leafy stuff and next to the tom?

@dick_turpin ah yes, they must be your stuffed balls.

penguin42,

@dick_turpin soak them in gravy and they might be less wrinkly.

The Rollright Stones, a stone circle in the Cotswolds. The story is that they were the servants of a king who were turned to stone by a witch, although as far as I can tell when someone came up with that story, the stones had already been there for about three thousand years. I’m sure whoever assembled them is happy about that.

A lovely place to be in the sunshine. Far from the world of people and jobs and hassle.

A small collection of big stones in a sunny green grass field. The stones are all taller than a person, and heavily eroded by water; they lean up against one another almost like a tent. They’re surrounded by a metal fence at waist height, painted green

@sil You can never be too sure if it was some ancient religious ceremonial site, or a bored farmer.

Immigration pro tip: if you're from somewhere else but living in the UK, you can instantly gain a lot of clout if someone tells you where they're from and you can make a reference to it from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

(e.g., "I'm from Guilford" / "Oh, just like Ford Prefect")

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@n8 Of course Ford Prefect was an immigrant trying to fit in with the name...

The downside of my parents living in an area full of littering vape addicts is there being litter everywhere.

The upside is I’ve just walked their dog and obtained lots of free lithium ion batteries. Some still in vapes. I wonder if I can do something with the heating elements too…

My grandma died a few weeks ago and while we are up in Essex visiting my parents, we have spent some time rescuing some things from my grandma and grandpa’s house.

It’s funny the things I have memories attached to, from spending time with my grandpa in his little workshop room as a child.

Some of the stuff is just random like the unused 150w Sainsburys lightbulb from who knows when and the 90s Ford keyring, but the multimeter, magnifying glasses and stopwatch particularly hold memories.

penguin42,

@cablespaghetti You can probably date the Avo meter; I've not seen an Avo that looks relatively modern before.

trams are lively enough during football matches, but having a Barry Manilow concert next door to it at the same time will make them 'interesting' - I guess they'll be tram fulls of drunks singing Copacabanaaaaaaaaa.

@emf 's health page is very boring; good covid etc rules, sensible camping rules - but no mention of RF burns, radiation exposure or welding accidents - this place sounds way more boring than the people who seem to be going to it.
(I'm not attending, but it does sound fun)

@sully I find travel really hard with my eczema; actually, not so much the travel as staying places; I can just about cope with an overnight in a hotel, never tried camping.

penguin42,

@mansr Originally I got it wrong and searched for 'Adom' East Street; searching for Adom "East Street' got me https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=File:Adorn_in_East_Street_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1897851.jpg¶ms=051.069614_N_-001.802994_E_globe:Earth_type:camera__heading:45.00&language=en

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr I've also just asked a couple of AIs; Gogole's told me such a junction was very improbable and gave up. ChatGPT's first go told me there was one in Wellington, NZ and I looked and couldn't find it; I told it to give me a location and it apologized and gave me one in Chichester, which it then told me was where there was a medieval market cross and it gave me the location; not too bad; I asked it if there were any others in the UK and it seems to have made one up in Horsham.

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr It doesn't seem modern though; they're still labelled that way in a 1830-1880 map; https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=20.0&lat=51.06957&lon=-1.80314&layers=257&b=22&o=100

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr My bet is that there was a basic cross there sometime long ago.

Question that came up at film club last week: I subscribe to 3 weekly magazines (one of which resulted in a suggestion for the club, hence the topic). Can you guess which 3?

Hints: they’re all published in the UK and not ‘top shelf’.

If this lands on your feed, tell me about different features that are just missing in Matrix.

It can be anything, but please don't include memes like "unable to decrypt message" or other things that are already in the works, or maybe has already been merged (e.g media captions)

Some examples include better forwarded messages, rich profiles, or a live location sharing, just to name a few.

(I am writing something about this, boosts appreciated!)

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@cyrus You say 'live location sharing' - didn't the original Matrix spec including a message type for a location?
