Immigration pro tip: if you're from somewhere else but living in the UK, you can instantly gain a lot of clout if someone tells you where they're from and you can make a reference to it from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

(e.g., "I'm from Guilford" / "Oh, just like Ford Prefect")

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@n8 Of course Ford Prefect was an immigrant trying to fit in with the name...

My grandma died a few weeks ago and while we are up in Essex visiting my parents, we have spent some time rescuing some things from my grandma and grandpa’s house.

It’s funny the things I have memories attached to, from spending time with my grandpa in his little workshop room as a child.

Some of the stuff is just random like the unused 150w Sainsburys lightbulb from who knows when and the 90s Ford keyring, but the multimeter, magnifying glasses and stopwatch particularly hold memories.

@cablespaghetti You can probably date the Avo meter; I've not seen an Avo that looks relatively modern before.

#Manchester trams are lively enough during football matches, but having a Barry Manilow concert next door to it at the same time will make them 'interesting' - I guess they'll be tram fulls of drunks singing Copacabanaaaaaaaaa.

@emf 's health page is very boring; good covid etc rules, sensible camping rules - but no mention of RF burns, radiation exposure or welding accidents - this place sounds way more boring than the people who seem to be going to it.
(I'm not attending, but it does sound fun)

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@sully I find travel really hard with my eczema; actually, not so much the travel as staying places; I can just about cope with an overnight in a hotel, never tried camping.

I'm intrigued... what score do you get, and what input device did you use?

Apparently ~10 BPS is typical.

penguin42,

@attie 8.18BPS with a cheap mouse.

@martijnbraam I'd say wall mounts.

What's so special there?

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr Please tell me that's the correct orientation.

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr From the name of the shop shown, I think it's Salisbury.

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr Originally I got it wrong and searched for 'Adom' East Street; searching for Adom "East Street' got me https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=File:Adorn_in_East_Street_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1897851.jpg¶ms=051.069614_N_-001.802994_E_globe:Earth_type:camera__heading:45.00&language=en

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@mansr I've also just asked a couple of AIs; Gogole's told me such a junction was very improbable and gave up. ChatGPT's first go told me there was one in Wellington, NZ and I looked and couldn't find it; I told it to give me a location and it apologized and gave me one in Chichester, which it then told me was where there was a medieval market cross and it gave me the location; not too bad; I asked it if there were any others in the UK and it seems to have made one up in Horsham.

Question that came up at film club last week: I subscribe to 3 weekly magazines (one of which resulted in a suggestion for the club, hence the topic). Can you guess which 3?

Hints: they’re all published in the UK and not ‘top shelf’.

penguin42,

@pwaring New Scientist?

penguin42,

@pwaring Now I'm curious which film; I hope it was something classical like a Quatermass.

@elilla wth is 'bottom(1)' - or was that just the attempt to make every one type 'man bottom' ?

dick_turpin, to random

I'm not convinced people realise just how serious this is.
bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-6902615… IMO, the advice is cursory at best: "Boil the water." The parasite is in the supply, which means any water out of your taps in the kitchen and bathroom, including the toilet.

Even when you do get the "ALL CLEAR," it'll take a good few days of running your taps and flushing the loo to clean the system out.

I love this: "Likely cause...." personally, I don't believe a word of it. The wording is 'get out of jail'. For starters, it gives them an opportunity later to say, "We did say likely, you know."

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@dick_turpin I think Cryptosporidium is actually pretty common across the UK, the only difference here is it's hit a level high enough to be noticed!

I baked a Banana bread for the first time earlier in the week. Very nice; seems to get more bananay over time. Lovely bananay burps.. 🍌

(I didn't bother with the drizzle and banana chips on the top)

Explosion rocks #TSMC Phoenix fab with one death 😨

My team at #Intel #Fab42 discussed this.

Hopefully some lessons can be learned and future injury/death prevented.

Crikey there's a lot of negativity here today.

Seems like every other post is someone being loudly angry at someone else for reasons not covered in the context.

I hope it's just a passing thing, a big coincidence not indicative of anything major, and that everything starts going a bit better for everyone.

So this paper has this genetic tree and it's not the main point of the paper but

I can identify the first 7 clades from their outlines, avians and theropods and sauropods and so on down to triceratops

But what the hell is the bottom outline supposed to be. A 20 meter long slug?

When you were a kid, did you ever start colouring a picture, stray outside the lines and then just sort of go with the flow, claiming it was always supposed to be like that?

@woodpunk At least the background distracts from the hands, which just look way out of proportion.
