Nearly everyone we know (globally) that saw family over the holidays is sick now or the people they visited are sick.

We need to do better.
This is not the ‘new normal’ we were promised.
This is not a sustainable public health model.

Mixing with people is always going to spread illness, whether people know they're ill or not. The only way to guarantee not getting ill is to never see anyone, ever.

@RickiTarr Never seen the point of it. You can have a perfectly happy relationship without the needless faff of getting married.

If I was going to be with someone long-term and we needed the extra legal rights that a couple has, I'd probably opt for the civil partnership route.

@Jackthelad @luckytran Vaccines which help minimize acute symptoms. We have no treatment for king COVID. We have no treatment for the organ damage due to repeated bits of this vascular disease. We have no way to handle the coming public health crisis when entire communities now have a pre-existing condition[s].

So glad we are apparently tired of COVID and can afford to ignore it and otherwise fail to take precautions and/or observe reality.

Oh. No. Wait -the other thing. Not glad ; livid.

@mce @luckytran Paxlovid, Xevudy, Lagevrio and Veklury are all designated treatments for anyone who is more seriously affected by COVID. Vaccines combined with these treatments, and developing further treatments over time are how we manage COVID.

Hospitalisations and deaths are way down. Which means we've succeeded.

I need a place to scream.

The political party of which I've been a member for decades has just opened an account in Threads, as soon as it was possible. They have NOT opened a similar one in Mastodon, one year since the mass #TwitterMigration.

I'm outraged. How can it be that the values of this organisation are so far from mine at the moment.

The usual reason not to be in #Mastodon: "we have to stay in Twitter because it's where people are". Now they're in #Threads? WTF.

@EighthLayer I don't think they really want to release it. It's only because of some deal with the Singapore government who are providing subsidies on the account that they release a new IP that this thing is sort of being forced through.

It should have been cancelled ages ago.

My wife is looking forward to deleting her Instagram account once she can connect with the same folks from her Mastodon account. Being able to remain in touch with over 100M people who still use Meta products out of the comfort of an ad-free, privacy-friendly platform like Mastodon is a game changer.

I don't think they're capable of the "extinguish" part, because I doubt they're going to be buying Mastodon.

This hides all posts and profiles from Threads, prevents anyone from Threads from following you, and stops your posts from being delivered to or fetched by Threads. Simply click the "Block domain threads.net" option on any Threads profile or post you see in Mastodon.

Just because Meta may be a bad company to you or for you doesn't mean there's not some really good people on Threads that are simply using the platform for their enjoyment. That doesn't mean they do the things that Meta does or the things that bad people do. Always remember, there are bad people on EVERY platform in this world, because there's bad people all over the internet. Just like there's good people on every platform and good people on the internet.

It seems like it's not the UI or the usability, that get's people to leave #Mastodon nowadays but - small, yet vocal and totally not self-critical - parts of the community, that can't stop lecturing others about the #Fediverse and how to act/post/comment here or about what.
German Mastodon had the ridiculous debate about #Zoom, other parts similar stuff (scolding someone for #bw-photos... really?).
Maybe the recent update helps people get it together, otherwise it will get even quieter here.

@britt Black Friday has always been a bit of a scam in terms of the major retailers, but you can get some decent deals at the smaller ones.

Amazon are the worst though. Instead of reducing the prices, they just stick the RRP next to the existing price and claim it's 35% off, or whatever.

So, there is a group of people on Mastodon that I have a lot of trouble relating to and understanding, that I somewhat lovingly call "The Misanthropes". They do a few things that boggle my mind a bit. The first is constantly announcing how they don't like humanity, and don't really want to be around people, which is okay, I guess, I can understand that, except you're doing it on SOCIAL media. If you just want to read articles, and look at pictures there are tons of better sources than social media, so why are you here? If you really hate all of humanity so much, you have the option in this one area to avoid it completely, why don't you?

Another thing is no matter what question I ask or how innocuous it is, someone will question the validity of why I'm asking it or the entire foundation of the question. So, why?! If you read a question and it doesn't apply to you or it doesn't interest you, don't interact with it, these aren't compulsory. Or I will ask What someone's favorite color is, and someone will say purple, they will tell that person that purple is traditionally the color of royalty, and ask them Why they are supporting the Monarchy, or if someone says yellow, they will let them know that yellow is hideous, and they shouldn't like it. Most of my questions are opinion or experience based, so the answer doesn't really matter, I am just trying to learn what people are like. What do you get out of making other people feel bad about themselves over basically unimportant things? Does it make you feel better about yourself or superior in some way? I really want to understand. Overall, most people are interesting and pleasant and just want to connect, what do you want?
