Infrapink,

@ZachWeinersmith One of my colleagues unfortunately sank into antivaxxism and antimasking after his mother died of apparently a negative reaction to a COVID vaccine. He insisted I watch some stuff by Del Bigtree. I did on my own time. I took notes and read Bigtree's sources, and they didn't say what he claimed. I also found other sources. I ended up sending him a long, extensively-sourced email on exactly what Bigtree is getting wrong. Since then he has been less forceful with me.

You are charged with making a presentation for alien visitors about a great thing that humans have accomplished. What would you show them?

You don't need to accomplish anything in particular with your presentation just show something you sincerely feel represents humanity and represents us well. Sincerity matters most.

Further, you don't need to try to represent all of humanity. People all over the world will have the same chance. You just need to show the part you care and know about best.

Infrapink,

@futurebird This might be cliché, but #pyramids. Start with the ones in #Egypt. Talk about how the second-oldest civilisation managed to build such impressive structures with bronze tools.

Then show them the ones in #Mexico. Point out the clever perspective trick to make the sides of the staircases appear parallel from the ground.

Maybe also throw in the #NazcaLines, and be sure to mention that the #Quechua didn't even have writing at the time.

My son told me a concerning fact he learned today in school.

Because iron is the final fusion state of a star, extremely massive stars can end up as balls of iron compressed down tiny, but still iron.

I am very concerned about these lumps of iron.

What if someone makes a car out of one and it just sinks into the earth’s core, while everything else is pulled by gravity into the hole after it?

Worrying.

Infrapink,

@MarkMaguire @Tupp_ed In the comics, Thor's hammer is made of the core of a neutron star.

Never understood why powerful people think it’s such a magnanimous power play to tell an activist or a young person stuff like “if you ever had to manage real power like I do you’d understand that it’s never pleasant to find out how sausage is made”

As if we could have failed to recognize our own bone and gristle in the casings. As if anyone even asked for god-damned sausages in the first place.

We are aware how gross it is. This isn’t a revelation. That is why it must stop.

Infrapink,

@futurebird I worked in an actual sausage factory for a while. We made those meat slices that look like teddy bear faces. It actually made me a little better disposed towards sausages.

Happy Sunday! What sins are we doing today?

Infrapink,

@MnemosyneSinger Msotly sloth, a little gluttony. Might get in some lust later.

I won't intentionally do despair, but keep doing it unintentionally.

foolisholivia, to random

i’m sorry my british friends i hate calling it series 1, 2, whatever. the whole show is a series!!! how can each individual set of episodes also be a series!!!

Infrapink,

@foolisholivia

Series (US) = Show (UK)
Season (US) = Series (UK)

I suspect it goes back to film serials. Yanks used 'series' to mean everything in a serial, whereas Brits used it to mean a single storyline. That then carried over to TV.

16 & 17 y/o are the ones most affected by political decisions made by people like this councillor. They are old enough to raise a baby, get married, learn to drive, join the army, be held criminally responsible…. They are old enough to vote. @irelandpolitics @ukpolitics

Infrapink,

@harriettmb @irelandpolitics @ukpolitics Once upon a time, you couldn't vote until you were 21. I strongly suspect that people said much the same things back when the voting age was lowered to 18.

@valkyrie I suspect neuotypicality is probably more common than neurodivergence, or at least is more common than any particular neurodifference.

But we should always remember that 'normal' is not a synonym for 'good'.

    @Sheril@mastodon.social avatar

We often think of #memes as popular photos, videos, or phrases online.
But the term “meme” was coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins to describe a behavior, style or idea as a unit of culture that can spread or disappear. From social movements to religion to Grumpy Cat.
Even though most folks may not be aware of it, we’re sharing a popular concept from #science, every single day, across #socialmedia.

    Infrapink,

    @Sheril THANK YOU!

I remember one summer night dad and I were down south visiting family in the country. The moon was out and huge. He said something I think about often "You know what I worry about?" He said. "If I'd lived long ago before civilizations, would I have been able to tell that the moon is a sphere and not a flat disc?"

My mom thought this was pretty funny. But I don't know when people realized the moon was spherical--

Knowing things is kind of a gift.

    Infrapink,

@futurebird Hipparchus took a spherical moon (and sun) for granted in his work on eclipses, so it was at least known in ancient Greece. I get the impression the Babylonians were aware of this before the Greeks, but I wasn't able to find a source that is explicit on this.

The Sūrya Siddhānta, published in the 4th century of the Śaka Era (5th cenutry CE, 1st century BH) also considers the moon to be a sphere, and this was apparently established fact in India at the time.

    Infrapink,

@foolisholivia Indians are driving a roller around the south pole of the moon!

    Infrapink,

@foolisholivia I wasn't joking, there really is a rover, run by India's space agency, exploring the actual south pole of our moon. I just figured that if you didn't know what's going on in the world, cool space stuff is a good thing to be aware of.

Although I now realise it's not something going on in the world, because it's in space, so ignore me then.

    Infrapink, to NorthernIreland

    Oh, wow, this is nuts.

In 1999, secretaries were issues documents on how to correctly refer to and . The article describes it as being written for , but it sounds like a standard document issues to all secretaries.

Apparently as late as 1999, Secretaries had to be specifically advised not to refer to the as the , a political entity that had not existed since 1937.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2023/0824/1401391-northern-ireland-briefing-papers/

    Infrapink,

Also they were not to refer to Britain as "the mainland". You'd think this is obvious, but it isn't so to too many Sasanaí, because of and

My dad encountered this attitude when he was working. A British vendor talked about the business they did "on the mainland". Dad raised his hand and asked "So are you talking about France, Germany, Switzerland...?" This was in the 1990s.

    Infrapink,

It also adivses not to refer to Northern Ireland as or as "The Province". Actually, can we get this piece of advice to everyone in the UK and some people in Ireland? Because NI is not Ulster. Ulster is one of the provinces of Ireland, and contains nine counties. Northern Ireland comprises six of those counties, making it ⅔ of Ulster. Yet so many people use "Ulster" to mean "Northern Ireland".

    Infrapink,

@marcas The actual name of the country is Ireland. It says so right in Article 4 of the Constitution:

    https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/cons/en/html

Thus Ireland refers either to the country or the island depending on context. Calling it Republic of Ireland is like calling someone Mx. Alex Smith. 'Mx.' isn't part of Alex's name, it's a descriptor (which would distinguish them from Mr. Alex Smith and Ms Alex Smith).

I've noticed that cis people seem to find me taking off my shirt quite interesting. I think it's possible that they are curious what's underneath. Are those real boobies?

Or did I just roll up a bunch of socks? 🤣🧦🤔

They seem almost fascinated when they realized that they're real.

    😂

    Infrapink,

@antiproton Oh, I meant breasts that could, in principle, be fondled. Obviously I won't fondle any without prior explicit agreement.
