The "Recall can't record DRMed video content" thing is because DRMed video content is entirely invisible to the OS. The OS passes the encrypted content to your GPU and tells it where to draw it, and the GPU decrypts it and displays it there. It's not a policy decision on the Recall side, it's just how computers work.

it was only recently that many publishers even used unique DRM keys for media. they used to basically generate one private key blob and give the identical blob to people. now they're building systems with unique blobs that could be used to identify infringement and distribution back to an actual actor that facilitated the unlock of the original stream.

i threat model some of those systems. there are tons of ways to implement DRM and i avoid it whenever i can.

@waderoberts @mjg59 @pluralistic I always find it infuriating that publishers both pushed for artificial digital scarcity and not allowing us to re-sell our digital purchases. Pick one.

Welp, I knew Microsoft's CoPilot+ Recall was going to be a privacy disaster but I didn't expect it to turn into an enterprise computing catastrophe for Microsoft quite this fast!

But this can't be a one-off. Any large enterprise that has to comply with a regulated privacy environment—HIPAA in the USA, GDPR in the EU, banking/insurance/finance globally—must be considering a ban on Microsoft installations on laptop/desktop computers right now or be breaking the law.

Trump has threatened a 10% tariff on all imports.

Tariffs can be used strategically, but a blanket tariff is effectively just a sales tax on American consumers.

Trump's tariff tax would cost the average family an extra $1,500 year.

@pluralistic The sad thing being, of course, that society is far more interested in finding and punishing a thousand one dollar cheaters (and the vast cost of that) than it is in prosecuting the single thousand dollar (corp) cheater.

I wouldn't normally do this but after two very bad experiences with Ed Napleton dealerships I wanted to make a PSA to people in the St. Louis, MO region:

Avoid Ed Napleton dealerships if you can. They are good at pulling a bait and switch, wasting a lot of your time in the process. With lots overflowing they are still trying to add a "pandemic market adjustment" of $2,000. I'd like to save people the time and frustration.

"Does kink belong at #Pride " is trending again, no big surprise there.

I invite those seriously discussing this question to ask themselves whether there is any level of respectability to which we could possibly aspire, which the cishet conservative folks would possibly accept as publicly acceptable, and then consider why you're letting them define the limits.

These are, after all, people who would consider a "Let Trans Kids Grow Up" shirt as morally indefensible, who believe that a book about two male penguins raising a chick is a vile and outrageous piece of media.

To the amoral conservative guardians, throwing homeless people in jail and burning their belongings is perfectly defensible, but we, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, are in our very existence a kink, a moral aberration.

I'm not saying genitalia should be on full public display. I am saying that if we let the busybody crowd set the rules, before long there won't be any Pride celebrations anymore.

Watching H5N1 extend its host range, now show respiratory symptoms in a human case, should concern us all. We are whistling past the graveyard, not remotely prepared for what comes next. Perhaps H5N1 will not acquire the mutations necessary to ensure efficient human-to-human transmission, but counting on good fortune is not a strategy.

The fact that A.I. doesn't exist, but we call all the different types of machine learning "A.I." because it's more marketable, is a perfect representation of how humanity would rather worship a lie that sells, than a boring truth.

The cycle just repeated itself, again.

But this time Biden himself announced it, then Netanyahu rejected the entire “permanent ceasefire” section. This sick cycle must end.

Yeah, I'm really dwelling on this analogy I came up with today that your relationships with people are like gardens the two of you tend together.

It's such a helpful perspective for me both on the relationships that are thriving and the ones that are not. And on the ones that basically don't exist.
