My teenaged daughter decided a year ago or so that she wants to go to #university in #norway. Sadly it’s not realistic as I think their courses are all in Norwegian.
She also wants to go to university in #edinburgh but sadly that’s way too expensive. Otherwise I’d say yes in a heartbeat.
Still, I’m proud she’s already broadened her horizons beyond #Canada.
My swanky new office. That I can’t get into because I don’t have a key. And even if I could get in, there’s no desk. But, after a windowless existence for many years, it is nice to finally see some daylight. 😆 @academicchatter@histodons#histodon#adjunctlife#university#highered
I've done this too - delivered lectures, for no pay, bcs it's good to have contact with students & I enjoy it.
And those who are paid to teach take extra effort to ensure courses are as good as they can be. Much in UK universities relies on goodwill between staff and employer, with staff willing to go the extra mile.
This docking of pay is short-sighted and foolish and will destroy goodwill.
In Moriarty's case, I wonder if it's even legal. #university#strike#administration 2/2
Stop evaluating academics based on #university#ranking indicators. Start rewarding the contributions of faculty and researchers in all areas of university activities.
Stop constructing university strategies based on university rankings. Do not use ranking tiers in analytical reports for management decision making; instead, focus on the actual contributions made by a university (scientific, educational, and societal).
Stop evaluating universities based on ranking indicators. Every university has a unique mission, and only fulfillment of this mission really matters.
Stop using ranking information in national strategies and other kinds of ambitions. Only universities’ contributions to national and global goals should be considered.
Stop paying money for consulting services to ranking compliers. This is a pure conflict of interests. Source: https://www.leidenmadtrics.nl/articles/the-role-of-university-rankings-in-research-evaluation-revisited
I gotta say, #English#proficiency requirements for #university#admissions are unreasonably inconsistent: exemption from #TOEFL et al. seems to vary greatly, from just a degree from an university with English instruction, to only having English as a mother tongue... Even region restrictions exist in between... C'mon, I lived my life mostly in English for so many years, is that not enough?!
A company developing a drug delivery process with treatments activated by ultrasound received an option to license a key technology from its founders' university labs.
Last night, city council voted to make a change to a building code that would allow a larger number of not-blood-related people to live together under one roof.
A developer of electronic health data tools and a university's neuroscience labs are collaborating on tests of Parkinson's disease drugs using digital measures of patient functioning.
During the engineering work for the supersonic Concorde in England, "Thunderbirds" TV series creator Gerry Anderson was visiting the main facility one day. Someone asked him what he did for a living. Feeling massively outranked by all the engineering talent surrounding him there, he quietly replied that he made children's TV shows. Asked which ones, he mentioned Thunderbirds.
Within minutes he was surrounded by Concorde engineers who wanted to talk to him and shake his hand, many of whom told him it was his shows that had inspired them toward engineering careers, because they wanted to actually build the planes and rockets he had in his series. He was flabbergasted.
The original Star Trek had a similar effect on many career choices.
Now of course, TV mostly inspires people toward careers as lazy bums or crooks.
