💡 Did you know that #UNESCO recognizes software, source code, and hardware as open scientific knowledge, and recommends that it be made available under a license that allows “access, reuse, repurposing, adaptation and distribution”?
But why do we care about Open Science at the :fsfe: #FSFE?
Christian Busse, FSFE Volunteer and #OpenScience Coordinator answers this questions in this talk:
Forth Bridge.
🇬🇧 The Forth bridge is one of three bridges over the Firth of Forth. The bridges connect the towns North Queensferry and South Queensferry. When it opened in 1890, the railway bridge had the largest span in the world and is made entirely of steel. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
Every day, around 200 trains use the 2.5 kilometre long Forth Bridge to cross the Forth. The two other bridges in this area are located inland an make it possible to cross the Firth o by car.

The #UNESCO site is one of Vietnam's most popular #TouristDestinations, with more than seven million people visiting its blue-green waters & rainforest-topped limestone islands last year.
In 2015, Nepal was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Durbar Square in Kathmandu (which is full of temples and palaces and is a Unesco world heritage site) was abdolutely wrecked by the earthquake. I visited in 2022 and there were still buildings that were 100% leveled and buldings that were being propped up to keep them from falling over.
I will always remember all of the religious pilgrims there and the occasional goat staked out next to a temple.

On December 12th, #SaveStonehengeWHS will be taking the #UKGovernment to court over the unlawfulness of the Stonehenge Tunnel Proposal, which will cause 'permanent and irreversible damage' to the #WorldHeritage site.
If this tunnel goes ahead, which is intended to 'solve traffic problems', #UNESCO would take away world heritage status from both #Stonehenge & #Avebury.
'The Japanese government decided Tuesday to recommend a collection of photos and videos depicting the devastation in Hiroshima after the August 1945 atomic bombing to a UNESCO documentary heritage program for 2025... If accepted, it will mark the first time documents related to the atomic bomb have been added to the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Memory of the World Register.'

#Ukraine is a country with a history of more than 1000 years, a meeting place for various cultures, and is home to seven incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
This is a historic event for #Ukraine and an important step in the development and protection of the cultural and natural heritage of Ukraine," acting Culture Minister Rostyslav Karandieiev.
A place on the Committee opens up new opportunities for Ukraine's active participation in implementing the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the Ukrainian Culture Ministry said.
In particular, it presents a chance to include new sites on the World Heritage List and the World Heritage in Danger.
"Ukraine was among the nine countries elected to the #UNESCO World Heritage Committee during the Nov. 22 vote for the first time in history.
