134 years ago today. The Forth Bridge, now often known as the Forth Rail Bridge, was officially opened by Edward, Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, on 4 March 1890. At the time it was seen as the eighth wonder of the world. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/queensferry/forthrailbridge/index.html

Forth Bridge.
🇬🇧 The Forth bridge is one of three bridges over the Firth of Forth. The bridges connect the towns North Queensferry and South Queensferry. When it opened in 1890, the railway bridge had the largest span in the world and is made entirely of steel. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
Every day, around 200 trains use the 2.5 kilometre long Forth Bridge to cross the Forth. The two other bridges in this area are located inland an make it possible to cross the Firth o by car.

This was the first of three major bridges built across this part of the Firth of Forth in three different centuries. Here's Number 13 from the Firth of Forth Series, 1996-97 by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004)

We have this print in the guest house. It’s one of 30 prints of paintings in there by that artist. If you ever cross the Forth Bridge you will recognise the feeling and experience that this image replicates. It is a remarkable construction that carries the railway from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. ‘Willy’ would have crossed if many times on her way home to St Andrews.

A triumph of over-engineering, the Forth Bridge, often called the Forth Rail Bridge since the arrival of the Forth Road Bridge: now one of three great bridges across this part of the Firth of Forth, each built in a different century.
