Shipping emissions could be halved without damaging trade, research finds - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/26/shipping-emissions-could-be-halved-without-damaging-trade-research-finds needs to be done as a priority - shipping is dirty

sheislaurence,

@glynmoody If the world is really interested in reducing #carbon in the #shipping industry, perhaps the real #climateaction would be to dismantle the mafia #fossilfuel footman organisation that is the #IMO. https://oceanrebellion.earth/imo-were-watching-you/ and https://gcaptain.com/a-club-for-old-sailors-new-york-times-article-blasts-imos-secrecy/

Rich nations still think that they don't have to participate in real climate finance.

#OceanWarming
(1/n)

The next 7 years until the end of the #SoaringTwenties, in particular the first half, could see 👉exceptionally high global #temperatures exacerbating the #ClimateCrisis.👈

On top of the principle cause of #GlobalWarming, the "standard" #antropogenic #GreenhouseGases, #CarbonDioxixide (#CO2) and #Methane (#CH4), there is a combination of 3 more causes which could turbo-charge the #GlobalThermostate:

"...implemented ship emissions standards - 👉cutting the limit for #sulphur #emissions by 85 per cent👈.

Since then, the 👉skies over #shipping lanes have cleared substantially.👈"

Should be good news, right?
Well, for the prevention of the scourge of #forests, #AcidRain, it is.
Not so for #GlobalWarming, as we will see.

Let's move on to the two natural causes of our "climatic turbo boost," both recurring from...

About that graph on heat:

"The shocking visual is prompting many to ask whether this recent surge [in heat] is evidence that human-caused heating has propelled the past a .

Climate scientists say the answer is likely no. Instead, it is much more probable to be ... a coincidence of natural factors piled on top of the steady trend of human-caused global heating. "

Jeff Berardelli explains those factors:

The next factor is about the Faustian bargain we have with #AirPollution: it kills. At the same time it shields the planet from the sun's heat - yes, we're already doing #GeoEngineering on a big scale.

Industralised nations are cleaning up their act, and the air. Sulfur emissions from global #shipping have plummeted, and with those also serious air pollution. Yay! But it does thin the heat shield.

This year, there is also less Sahara dust blowing around.

All these photos of Atlantic seaboard cities choked with orange haze look just like all the 1970s photos of when they were choked with smog. You know, before the EPA and federal air quality standards.

An aerial photo of New York City, shrouded in an orange haze. It is not immediately clear whether it was taken today or 50 years ago, though the sharp focus hints at an current photo.

Perhaps worth noting that there were zero regulations on maritime emissions until the Obama administration. Even now they only exist within certain boundaries around US coasts, but they have already saved thousands of lives. We measure the effect by infant mortality, but the pollution kills people of all ages

Here’s a #solution story about #cleanenergy. Japan is using an #electric tanker to transport batteries charged by offshore #wind to places without #renewable #energy resources. The ship can carry whole-house or grid-scale batteries. The ship itself is electrically powered, since conventional shipping releases large amounts of CO2. #climate #shipping https://electrek.co/2023/05/29/electric-tanker-transport-clean-energy-batteries/

eBay sales kinda suck lately, and now they're trying to automatically opt you in to using their international shipping service (they may have opted you in to this- if you don't want it like I don't, go check to be sure).

I go to opt out (since my shipping is included in my U.S. listing price, international shipping is expensive and complicated, I don't like intermediary services, I only ship internationally in certain cases), and I get this. Opt out being processed?

eBay. Seriously.

Five ships to know me:

  1. Mulder/Scully- TXF
  2. Starsky/Hutch- S&H
  3. Dean/Cas- SPN
  4. Jim/Blair- The Sentinel
  5. Jack/Daniel- SG1

and bonus rarepair John/Ronon Dex from Atlantis

#fandom #shipping

I've since retired most of these ships as they involve cops and/or the military, but I don't want to disavow their importance in my life or how much they meant to me at the time I was deep into those fandoms. Jack and Daniel for instance got me through a horrible grad school experience.

caroline,

I got completely lost in the sharing of things, oops. I meant to continue with the actual intro bit: #shipping has always hooked me into a fandom, I just didn’t know it. I mean like watching Get Smart on Nick at Nite when I was a kid. Rurouni Kenshin and Fruits Basket later. I’m largely into #slash as an adult and will attach to the repressed tsundere every time. I read more #rule63 than proper f/f pairs (I’m just copping to it!!) which thankfully MDZS fandom is full of.

Anyone of you want to squee about their with me? I'm still looking for an interview partner for : https://shippingcast.fandomish.net/admin/hi-from-my-hiatus/

Signal boosts welcome!

Wanna talk about your OTP? I'm once again looking for someone to interview on my #podcast about #fandom and #shipping for the first ep after my little hiatus.

Any and all ships (not previously covered) are welcome! (List here: https://shippingcast.fandomish.net/episode-archive )
Recording should happen sometime this week. It takes 1-2 hours, plus some prep time (collecting of recs, searching for the next interview partner). I'd love to hear from you! #shippingcast

Signal boosts welcome. :)
