Logging and koalas do not mix
Spoiler: End native forest logging altogether, seek World Heritage protection for these forests.

"Koalas cannot read maps, and do not understand human zoning. If their habitat in plantations is cleared, they die – just as we’ve seen in Victoria, where deaths of koalas in blue gum plantations have made national news."

"For a koala-protecting National Park to actually protect koalas, it must be based on the identification and reservation of high value habitat – such as hardwood plantations. If we leave all plantations out, some of the best habitat in the park will continue to be logged. Without plantations, the park will be filled with holes, severing critical corridors and hampering the movement of koalas."

What should we do?
"We have to restore the areas lost to logging and the Black Summer bushfires and flag more forested areas for inclusion – especially unburnt habitat. And the government has to end logging within the proposed park area. If we want a viable alternative, the government should begin new plantations outside the park area and buy out existing logging contracts inside the park. Logging and koalas do not mix."

"We should give up on the idea of protecting koala “hubs”. Instead, we should prioritise the protection of koala populations unaffected by fire and in untouched forest areas wherever they are, whether inside or outside of these hubs.
Every bit of habitat on public land should be ruled in, as this is what counts, not zoning. Local communities – not just the forest industry and environment groups – need to be included in negotiations. The government should also consider community efforts to seek World Heritage protection for these forests."

London's Big Ben is finally restored, but the rest of Westminster is threatened by decay.

Visits to the iconic tower have resumed after five years of work. The final cost has more than doubled compared with the initial budget, due to the building's fragile condition caused by German bombing raids of May 1941.

What should happen to native forests when logging ends? Ask Victoria’s First Peoples

"Conservationists are celebrating a win sought for decades. The damage done by logging on biodiversity has been significant, with once common species now endangered and mature forests now fragmented and dotted with young fire-prone regrowth."
"Colonisation affected Country differently across Australia. But many effects are similar across the continent. European-style land management coincides with species extinctions across the continent. "

Reading the black book: The number, timing, distribution and causes of listed extinctions in Australia

"We conclude that 100 Australian endemic species are validly recognised as extinct since 1788: a rate of loss of about 4.3 species per decade since European colonisation of the continent. This rate is not diminishing and we interpret this more-or-less constant but continuing rate of loss .."

"Here, we review the record of extinctions. We ask the following: (1) how many extinctions have occurred; (2) whether particular taxonomic groupings have been most affected; (3) when did they occur; (4) where did they occur; and (5) what factors caused or contributed to them?"

Plants are likely to absorb more CO₂ in a changing climate than we thought

"And last but not least, because plants help fight climate change, it’s essential to conserve existing plant biomass and restore lost vegetation."

"But while plants might even be more industrious helpers than previously assumed, they will never do the heavy lifting for us. It is still up to us humans to fight climate change by drastically cutting fossil fuel emissions. There is no shortcut".>>

Restoration or destruction?
Elsewhere they start to restore and protect nature, in Australia the environment stays poor and is deteriorating

"Nature is dying faster than ever before in recorded human history with devastating consequences for people and the planet, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) found in its review of the scientific research in 2019. In Europe, where more than 80% of habitats are in poor shape, the nature restoration law was proposed in a bid to reverse this trend and stop the planet heating."

"Legislation will set targets to restore 20% of EU land and seas by 2030, and 90% of degraded habitats by 2050"

"Protecting nature is a cheap way of keeping people safe from violent weather and a key tool to cut planet-heating pollution. The European Commission estimates that every euro invested in restoring land would offer a return of between €8 (£7) and €38."

There are futures in #ecosystem #restoration. Get into it.

Imagine employing the energy and commitment of all the people protesting in the streets, instead participating in mass actions of earth restoration. It'll take a bit more planning than making a cardboard sign and chanting slogans while obstructing traffic, but a beach or a river could be cleaner, #water could be captured for reuse and to infiltrate back into the earth, #CityForests and #orchards could be established, marginalized people could have #gardens, rain gardens could be installed, food distributed. This is a tiny list. You can think of others.

Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.

We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.

Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
