Something I tell my software students a lot when they’re looking for jobs is to remember that a shockingly large number of job descriptions are written by people in HR who have next to zero understanding of the industry, the specific team, or the business need.
All they’ve got to work with is fragments they’ve heard without comprehension, coming to them through a terrible game of corporate telephone.
@inthehands I have bad news for you and your students: the #job-posting pool is full of shallow #recruiters that go far below the already low bar set by the worst #HR departments.
And company #hiring managers turn to these outfits because they don’t have firsthand knowledge about how shitty they are, but they do know that about their own HR.
My employer's website: “We're denormalizing the biostatic conglomeration of cromulent anaglyphs for just-in-time metempsychosis.”
Recruiter's unsolicited email to me: "Angus -- love how you're denormalizing the biostatic conglomeration of cromulent anaglyphs for just-in-time metempsychosis! At SpamCo, we specialize in finding top-tier talent …”
Me: Very authentic opening, sir, yes, you have absolutely persuaded me that I wish to do business with you.
God grant me the serenity to accept the #recruiters that don't understand the #jobs they're spamming me with, the patience to respond to them kindly, or at least the willpower to ignore them. #laidOff#jobHunting#getFediHired
THE FORM: "You should enter your resume and I will fill all the fields for you MAGICALLY" :magic_wand:
Me: "No thanks"
Me: spend time carefully filling each field in the job application manually and wishing they would just read my resume I also spent hours building manually and offers much better explanations and context
THE FORM: "Now that you have filled all the fields, give me your resume!" :neko_smiley:
Me: uploads my resume :blocky_white_cursor:
THE FORM: "Now I will overwrite ALL THE FIELDS with what I think works best because I AM SUPER INTELLIGENT WAY MORE THAN YOU. You're welcome!" 🤡
I just would like to point out that
none of the accounts I was forced to create for job applications so far had any options for multi-factor authentication or for deleting the account.
And all of the accounts I was forced
to create for job applications so far required to enter very sensitive information that was completely unnecessary to require.
I’ve built this little webpage
a few months ago to present together some of the work I did and help me find a job: https://emontheinternet.me
But, I am still uncertain about which drawing profile would be best for this, if any 🤔
I have not built this webpage for myself so I need external opinions. Your opinions (boosts welcome for reach) :boost_ok:
Which one of these
profile pictures do you think would work best on my webpage to find work? Or perhaps it would be best not to put any? What do you think?
Keep in mind that ✱
I am not targeting large corporations with that. I am aware my website doesn’t fit the “LinkedIn” style. But which picture do you think my favorite public-interest and/or privacy organizations would like the best? 💚👇❔
(read alt-text to see each picture' number)
EDIT: I added a poll below for people who prefer to vote without commenting. I could not include both a poll and pictures in the same post 📥👇
Don't learn #php, they say. It's a dead language, they say. There are no jobs, they add. Learn #javascript instead. It's much better. Jobs are plentiful.
I don't know if it's because of this or some other reason, but we have had great success with finding PHP developers and have had an awful time trying to find JS developers. Not that we don't get applicants, but when you get to the interviews, it's like ... not good.
Just because there's a surfeit of #jobpostings doesn't mean the mercenary #developers that pay attention to such things will land one.
#SoftwareDevelopment is about #programming languages as much as carpentry is about hammers or astronomy is about telescopes. But you wouldn't know it from the carpetbagger #recruiters, shallow pundits, and mindless parrots.
I'm increasingly glad I ended up sticking with perl professionally. Yes, it's not popular. But I'm doing real work on real systems, with no crypto or AI nonsense anywhere in sight. And it's not super easy to hire perl experts these days, so the salaries have gone up. It was a tough decision with some false starts exploring options, but in the end sticking with the language I genuinely enjoy is paying off.
@perigrin@uncanny_kate This goes further up the #career stack. A lot of #recruiters are obvious commodity cogs in the #HR machine. Bottom-feeders. Avoid them too, because they’ll just waste your time and energy winding you up to pursue here-today-gone-tomorrow #jobs.

It is interesting to observe #recruiters responses as someone who has a #career that is half Game Development and half #Enterprise Software Engineering. When I apply for Enterprise jobs I'm told either "You don't have enough #experience." 🙄 or "You'll just go back to #Gamedev when something is available." (Fair point, it was my original career). When I apply for Gamedev jobs I get "You'll have more luck with Enterprise Java." or "You'll just leave the industry again."
Thank you for #targeting me with your many open #positions based solely on the occurrence of the word "#software" in my resume.
I particularly appreciate the ones which are onsite, in a country I do not live in, and which I would need a difficult-to-obtain work visa for, if I ever wanted them.
