🎤 On BBC Sounds, a collection of programmes celebrating the anniversary of what has become the most important musical genre of recent decades and the source of some of the biggest hits of the 21st Century.
I am new here and I write mostly in german, but you can follow me as well when u speak english. Certainly I feel little bit lonely so I hope I find few cool people.
Okay let's listen to some great music by women bc there sure is a lot of it
We'll start with a few of my favorite current artists in different genres. First up is Noname and her second Tiny Desk concert. Her album Sundial was one of my couple favorites last year in any style.
Here it is, my top 20 albums of 2023. It's not ALL metal, although there's a lot of metal. I know not everyone likes metal (or brutal death metal) - but there's some rap, some punk, a little post punk- actually, my top 3 here are all non-metal.
As always, let me know your thoughts, especially if you check some of them out, or already have.
Rap music will be 50 years old in August. In many ways, it's always been a socially conscious genre — but not when it comes to homophobia. @TheConversationUS's Matthew Oware says this is changing. Here, he tracks how attitudes have changed for the better in the rap community.
Rough edged, heartfelt and unconcerned with the latest trends, @anilmc's Wild Word Tour Album delivers a slate of approachable hip-hop tracks. Refreshingly eclectic, any given track might offer more-or-less classic hip-hop production, borderline poppy beats or even a little folk hop, all topped with Anil's distinctive delivery.
#pouetradio#rap "je contourne les raccourcis, je courtise les détours..." Classe. Du rap un peu intello, mais toujours incisif, plein de refs cinématographiques #LesChevalsHongrois
ICYMI, I posted my final Substack of the year on Sunday. It gathers a handful of Best of 2023 lists I contributed to as well as some final thoughts on the year in rap. Read here. ---> https://mreeves.substack.com/p/the-end-of-2023
One of my goals in 2024 is to find more folks on Mastodon actively interested in rap and music culture in general. I love the techies and politicos...but I'm still looking for my people here. Reach out if that means you.

Okay, @miona's #VGMWednesday has a theme of #Sampled - looking for songs where elements from video game music is incorporated into the beat / melody of a song.
Let's take it back to 1995 when Bone Thugs-N-Harmony sampled the underrated #SegaGenesis fighting game Eternal Champions in their aptly titled track, "Eternal."
50 years ago today, DJ Kool Herc (aka Clive Campbell) put on a "back-to-school jam" in the rec room of an apartment block in the West Bronx. Entrance cost 25c for "ladies" and 50c for "fellas." Herc took the chance to show off a technique he'd developed where he switched between copies of the same record to extend drum breaks, talking over the music at the same time, and hip-hop was born. Here's a look at how that moment created a culture.

Ihr seid angewidert vom deutschen Hip Hop bzw Rap wegen den aktuellen Mainstreamrappern ala Kollegah 🤮, Bu$hido 🤮, Capital Bra 🤮, Farid Bang 🤮 etc. aufgrund ihrer Verherrlichung harter Drogen, Protzerei ihres angeblichen Reichtums, Misogynie, toxischer Männlichkeit, Schwurbelei und Antisemitismus?
Ja?
