Volunteers from @bikeloudpdx shouldn't need to stand in front of #PBOT contractors' trucks to stop them from removing #pdxBikes infrastructure, but that's where we are with the current dysfunction at city hall. (Yes, even while they scramble to fill a budget hole that will cost union jobs.) Get involved and let #Portland's elected officials know that #ClimateAction, #SafeStreets & #VisionZero are popular + too important to trade for a few free on-street #parking spaces.
I was today years old when I learned "parking" literally used to refer to civic green space lining the roads
So every time you say parking you're directly referencing a thing that was lost during the automobile's aggressive and costly takeover of public spaces
I cycled home this afternoon past 2 schools at the end of the school day. At both I had to have words with drivers parked on the yellow zigzags waiting to pick up kids. The lines are there to keep children safe, including the ir own. Why do drivers feel it ok to endanger children? #parking#entitlement
small bit of solace to realize that the #parking garages dug halfway to hell under every building in Portland's south waterfront are in the flood plain
"Results of a spatial regression indicate that public transport stops, pedestrian zones, and public parking garages nearby increase the attractiveness of retail locations. On the contrary, much on-street parking capacity in the immediate vicinity reduces retail rents. "
“We are in a #parking garage of a residential building in Williamsburg that is one block from two train lines, but was required to build parking. So we’ve taken over two of those parking spaces and built a fully-furnished and usable studio apartment inside.”
Genuinely fascinated by the number of people who didn't notice the Williams logo and are commenting on the "Motorola-branded" relays throughout the machine.
Like, yeah, those logos are really similar... but the text on the relays is also upside down.
People can't imagine a future where we banned cars, but how many failed techbro propellerheaded ideas to stop #globalWarming do you need to see before it's hard to imagine one where we didn't?
@cyclotopie@gallegre@TiconderogaNo1 yes but who is using carshare for their daily commute? In settings where the vast majority would prefer better options, most still drive and have a hard time understanding or supporting policies that make driving short trips a less desirable option. Build streets for cars only = get traffic congestion. #InducedDemand
When people don't need cars for most trips, and #parking isn't free, car-sharing becomes useful.
Just dropping in to say it's possible to own a #carand prefer getting around by other modes most of the time.
Habituation to #driving is not an insurmountable obstacle to reducing #automobile dependency and creating safer, greener, more resilient cities. Habits can be broken if the right supports are available at the right time.
@PaulWermer@mloxton Except for #parking. We plan parking for the worst case scenario, in which we assume every car within a 50-mi radius will suddenly need to be attracted to one central destination.
Did you know that parking is not part of the driver's test in SF? Like, any parking at all. You have to park at the end so that you can stop and get out of the car but parking has been removed from the test because it was deemed too hard
I mentioned this to a friend and apparently not everyone knows this
It could be so easy if we had a government that cared. In. #France all public #parking above a certain. size must have #solar. C'est le loi, on m'a dit. Seen at #Cora, Houssen, Colmar.
RT @enobacon 🤡 @tedwheeler was just clowning us when he said bicycling "needs to be a good value proposition" and then proceeds to put like five thumbs on the scale for cars, directly at the expense of the value proposition of bicycling. Better luck mayoring your next city. 🙄
I love love love this Strong Towns piece. It addresses some things I’ve tried to say in the past about the idea that cars equate to “freedom” (but with some real knowledge and insight behind it).
@IPEdmonton "car-based design creates a problem that only cars could solve—at an extremely high cost to users." Illich also wrote about how after you work to pay for the car and fuel, your net speed is ~8mph. And that's faster than walking, so what's a person to do??? Of course you wouldn't need to walk so far, but #parking.
What's with that headline fishing though? Nobody's threatening to take away anyone's cars. We sure can't afford to keep carrying them on the backs of the youth though.
