Initially implemented in 2015, the SUMP seeks to promote mobility that is less dependent on the car and more inclined towards sustainable alternatives. such as public transport, #bicycles and #pedestrian mobility.
TIL that @organicmaps has a (very WIP, but still) desktop app, and so now I can produce side-by-side comparisons. Voilà the query for "café" in #Toulon
Note also how the information is shown much more explicitly on the OrganicMaps view. The google map only becomes useful to #bike / #pedestrian once you zoom all the way in. Somehow their designers seem to be afraid of contrast or sth. 🤷
I just love how #OSM is so much better, thanks to all involved! 🫶
Here's my concept: a six-lane speedway is not needed anywhere along the Passaic River. The McCarter Highway should be converted to a two-lane access road, and everything else should be parkland.
Thursday, April 11, 2024 • From 6:00 to 7:30 pm: The City of #Newark hosts a meeting for the Newark Riverfront #Pedestrian & #Bicycle Access Concept Development Study to identify safety and mobility improvements between #BroadStreet and the Passaic waterfront area.
In #CompleteStreets this week, we're talking about the pandemic's impacts on #pedestrian and #bicycle#planning and gearing up for a perennial favorite among students: Stakeholder Speed Dating!
I invite a dozen or so local experts to come provide feedback on students' recommendations for safety and accessibility improvements in a small area. Students get 10 minutes with each set of experts before rotating on to the next set. It's chaos! It's awesome! It's #CarolinaPlanning!
Those eligible would have to pre-register at counters in Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda on the island or Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim on the mainland with their #MyKad and OKU cards issued by the #SocialWelfare Department
In the 1980s as railroads abandoned thousands of miles of track following deregulation,
Congress provided for “#railbanking,” seeking to preserve rail corridors while allowing for interim use as trails.
Today, there are nearly 26,000 miles of rail-trails in the U.S., according to RTC.
• More than $830 million in U.S. Department of Transportation funds announced last week under the ⭐️Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods ⭐️grant program went to #trails, #walking and a #biking#infrastructure, according to the Rails to Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit advocacy organization.
• Among the projects selected for the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods program are at least four that will 🔸repurpose former railroad lines into trails.🔸
• Additional funding of nearly $45 million is now available under the ⭐️Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment ⭐️program for planning and construction of #connected#pedestrian and #bicycle#networks within communities or along transportation spines between communities, regions or states.

“V2X connects vehicles to everything, though, this #technology can do much more than just protect #drivers. Like a #digital seatbelt for the 21st century, V2X-enabled #bikes can provide critical protection for their riders by prompting V2X #cars to display a warning right in front of the driver when a #cyclist is about to cross their path”
“anonymized #data can be shared with #cities to help plan new #bike and #pedestrian#infrastructure”
A planner became frustrated when they asked for plan input and I replied “oh joy, another plan.” Here’s the thing: The planning process is the problem. I’m burnt out. I discovered the #Denver bike plan a few years after it was completed and I was very excited! Then I found out there was no money nor desire to implement it. Then a few years later we updated the plan. /1
“That’s strange,” I thought. We hadn’t done anything with the first plan so why were we updating it? But whatever, we’re putting more time and effort into it so maybe now we’ll start. Nope, now since we’ve got a bike plan we need a #pedestrian plan and a #transit plan. /2
Senate Bill 52 in #Indiana has passed the Senate and is moving to the House. The bill will temporarily ban any dedicated lanes, specifically bus only lanes, from being constructed, and it will ban the no right turn on red signs in downtown #Indianapolis. This bill will increase congestion, increase #pedestrian fatalities, and undermine local governments' power. All for the misguided idea of improving traffic flow.
Prettier streets are safer streets, and the MUTCD update makes them easier. https://wapo.st/3HEm1Q5 (WaPo gift link) by Janette Sadik-Khan and Kate D. Levin.
Budapest, 1966. A man stops to look at his watch while standing by a "no stopping" sign. Another illustration perhaps that cities are designed for cars and traffic, and less for people who are pushed to margins of footpaths.
