As always, whenever I try to do anything outside, Zoey wants to get right in the middle of it. 🙄 I was oiling a new queen excluder and two new deep supers for the second new #beehive. #Beekeeping#Bees#Honey#CatsOfMastodon
Can #beekeeping people here offer some advice or suggest some resources to get started? My late grandpa had several hives some years ago and I would like to give it a shot.
I could have a hive or two at an allotment garden or a balcony, both at suburbs but with a fair amount of greenery and flowers. Thankful for any advice! #beekeepingforbeginners#beekeepers#honey

#Celtic#MythologyMonday: „#Honey was a very important food, as it was the only source of sweetness for the ancient #Irish. It was taken so seriously, that it had a whole Brehon Law devoted to it, called bechbretha, meaning ‘bee judgements’. It concerned such rules as, if a hive swarmed onto another man’s land, what portion of the honey produced should be allotted to each man, and was quite detailed and complicated.“

Making #honey wasn't on my list of things to do being retired, but when life gives you a beehive in your garage, you make honey :) bees were relocated, not killed. #bees
My first piece for the auction is finished! Original Unseen design, hand burned onto the wood. There will be no starting bid so you could grab a real bargain! All profits will go to @SEWH 🦔🐝 #art#handmade#wildlife#craft#bees#pyrography#woodworking#honey

It is just as well that the seeds of Dandelions are so infertile!!! But having deadheaded a great number, we have enough for the first couple of batches of Dandelion ‘honey’ of the season. Goes very well with lots of things, although I love it in yoghurt and porridge.
“The feeding places that the bees used to go to [to collect pollen and nectar], such as acacias, paliuruses and oaks were all destroyed. The future is uncertain in beekeeping, there is no place to go, all the places have been destroyed,”
“After the wildfires and the floods, beekeeping has regressed a long way. Bees are disappearing,”

Three jars of hot peppers coated with honey. If anyone local (Conejo Valley) is interested in beta testing a jar of these (for free), let me know. Someone suggested folks might like this, rather than having us compost the peppers after making "hot honey" #honey#hotpeppers#spicy#extraspicy
this sentence on our #Honey jar label perfectly encapsulate the #TapestryOfAlternatives : #Beekeepers from across the world - Zambia, Mediterranean, Scotland - all sharing very similar place-based environmental knowledge and skills, living in close symbioses with our fellow species 💚 #Indigenous#IndigenousKnowledge
Did #beehive inspections today. Our original #hive is still in stasis - a lot of #honey, but very little brood, & are only working on the original 5 drawn out frames that came with the #nuc we purchased in spring. There must be a new #virginqueen in the hive because we saw a few larva. We cannot figure out why she hasn't laid a bunch of brood, unless she died recently. Stumped.
In contrast, our swarm hive is outta control & made burr comb on the underside of the queen excluder!😂 #Beekeeping /1
Most generative AI related to entomology is pretty terrible, probably because the intricacies and obscurity of entomological knowledge aren't represented in the training data.
But prompts with more mainstream crossover seem to do interesting things.

"When you buy supermarket honey, you are getting something sweet and a bit floral but when you buy small batch local honey it is as unique as a single malt.”
When it comes to pure #Honey, clear provenance and traceability are key.
There are few food combinations closer to the source and local than avocados mixed with honey produced from the blossoms of the exact same avocado trees... #avocadoes#honey#food#beekeeping
There's generally a couple of very large, ripe avocados that have fallen near our hives in avocado orchards. The growers tell us the avocados are 30-50% larger near hives (they LOVE beehives for that reason). However, pickers will not pick the avocados very close to the hive, so... there's always a few that have fallen off a nearby tree in the hive zone. I've gone as far as snagging some honeycomb from a hive and dropping it into a ripe avocado, and there's lunch! #avocados#honey#beekeeping
