There are few food combinations closer to the source and local than avocados mixed with honey produced from the blossoms of the exact same avocado trees... #avocadoes#honey#food#beekeeping
There's generally a couple of very large, ripe avocados that have fallen near our hives in avocado orchards. The growers tell us the avocados are 30-50% larger near hives (they LOVE beehives for that reason). However, pickers will not pick the avocados very close to the hive, so... there's always a few that have fallen off a nearby tree in the hive zone. I've gone as far as snagging some honeycomb from a hive and dropping it into a ripe avocado, and there's lunch! #avocados#honey#beekeeping
How it started How its going
It is just as well that the seeds of Dandelions are so infertile!!! But having deadheaded a great number, we have enough for the first couple of batches of Dandelion ‘honey’ of the season. Goes very well with lots of things, although I love it in yoghurt and porridge.
So, my bees swarmed today. That was an adventure. My friend and I were able to retrieve the swarm from pretty high up in a tree on my property. Bees will swarm when a hive decides to split, usually because the space they're living in is getting too cramped for the number of bees that the local resources can support. In this case it's because we hadn't added additional boxes to expand the space for the hive soon enough, oops.
Enjoying this locally made fizzy #kombucha#drink made by #BabesHoneyFarm in #VictoriaBC - it is absolutely delicious! No bitter after taste. Very smooth & not overly sweet. You can smell & taste the lavender & citrus. I highly recommend this tasty non-alcoholic #beverage 👍
“The feeding places that the bees used to go to [to collect pollen and nectar], such as acacias, paliuruses and oaks were all destroyed. The future is uncertain in beekeeping, there is no place to go, all the places have been destroyed,”
“After the wildfires and the floods, beekeeping has regressed a long way. Bees are disappearing,”

Three jars of hot peppers coated with honey. If anyone local (Conejo Valley) is interested in beta testing a jar of these (for free), let me know. Someone suggested folks might like this, rather than having us compost the peppers after making "hot honey" #honey#hotpeppers#spicy#extraspicy
#Celtic#MythologyMonday: „#Honey was a very important food, as it was the only source of sweetness for the ancient #Irish. It was taken so seriously, that it had a whole Brehon Law devoted to it, called bechbretha, meaning ‘bee judgements’. It concerned such rules as, if a hive swarmed onto another man’s land, what portion of the honey produced should be allotted to each man, and was quite detailed and complicated.“

@maggiejk#Honey is often considered #antibiotic by many, but it contains energy. One thing we've learned about life from studying extremophiles is, if there is energy, life will find a way to exploit it. Another thing is honey doesn't kill all #bacteria and #fungus. Some can tolerate it, and just go dormant. There are many bacteria that are harder to kill when dormant. Simple boiling won't work. I would not be surprised to find out there are #fungi with similar abilities. Life finds a way!!!
Hot honey from the other day. Honey heated and mixed with a bazillion hot peppers, then strained. There is typically a lot of hot peppers coated with honey left over... (currently out to the compost pile, but I wonder if folks would like very sticky, hot peppers in honey) #honey#beekeeping#food
Spontaneously made some #muffins for #breakfast. Not something I make very often. Maybe every year or two… These are unplanned oat, date, raisins, 12-grain cereal, and molasses things.
@ottaross@YurkshireLad Definitely, you need to get your honey from a local beekeeper. Much better quality than the crap you find at the supermarkets. Here's our supplier. However, she's retiring, but passing on the business to someone else. #honey
