My favourite trees: the old village lime trees between the church and our museum. They are humming with bees now - and later we sell the delicious lime tree honey with it's scent of early summer.

There are few food combinations closer to the source and local than avocados mixed with honey produced from the blossoms of the exact same avocado trees...

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

There's generally a couple of very large, ripe avocados that have fallen near our hives in avocado orchards. The growers tell us the avocados are 30-50% larger near hives (they LOVE beehives for that reason). However, pickers will not pick the avocados very close to the hive, so... there's always a few that have fallen off a nearby tree in the hive zone. I've gone as far as snagging some honeycomb from a hive and dropping it into a ripe avocado, and there's lunch!

@ai6yr I had a friend who had terrible allergies. living in a very floral, arboreal area, he suffered terribly. His wife started giving him a teaspoon of local honey every day, for a year. The allergies went away! After 10 years, he quit eating the honey (the apiary on their property lost its keeper to sudden death)… and within 6 months, the allergies were back.

Using those pesky dandelions

It is just as well that the seeds of Dandelions are so infertile!!! But having deadheaded a great number, we have enough for the first couple of batches of Dandelion ‘honey’ of the season. Goes very well with lots of things, although I love it in yoghurt and porridge.

So, my bees swarmed today. That was an adventure. My friend and I were able to retrieve the swarm from pretty high up in a tree on my property. Bees will swarm when a hive decides to split, usually because the space they're living in is getting too cramped for the number of bees that the local resources can support. In this case it's because we hadn't added additional boxes to expand the space for the hive soon enough, oops.

@joycebell @BakerRL75 @ai6yr My father sent me deep red table wines that reminded me of a sweeter Malbec and other lighter reds. When I was in country, there were a lot of Chianti-types and I think a rich Cabernet.

I know an only enough Cyrillic to get me between train stations in Kiev, so my wine bottles were not something I could ask about easily. Also at the time I was there there was a huge shift from the Russian language into the Ukrainian language so I never was sure what to look up to translate. I think most of the time they were happy that I was trying to ask in and use the few words Ukrainian words I had acquired.

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: „#Honey was a very important food, as it was the only source of sweetness for the ancient #Irish. It was taken so seriously, that it had a whole Brehon Law devoted to it, called bechbretha, meaning ‘bee judgements’. It concerned such rules as, if a hive swarmed onto another man’s land, what portion of the honey produced should be allotted to each man, and was quite detailed and complicated.“

#Bees #BeeKeeping
That's interesting. I am new to beekeeping and hoping to catch a swarm this spring. I am already feeding wild bees on top of my hive boxes.

What I wonder is how the ancient Celts came to the conclusion that bees should be subject to human conventions of land ownership. That just seems weird. Bees have no respect for fencerows. They may even nest in them if there is room between the stones.

NeuKelte,
@NeuKelte@todon.eu avatar

@KawaTora It is about fairness and good relations between the beekeeper and his neighbours and not about disrespectful bees ...
