‘God forbid that a dog should die’: when Goodreads reviews go bad https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/feb/17/god-forbid-that-a-dog-should-die-when-goodreads-reviews-go-bad

Goodreads is horrible for readers and books. The technical platform is very badly maintained with bugs in the extreme. Amazon mine user data for nefarious purposes, for example, in building concentration camps (ICE).

I recommend anyone who's interested in keeping track of their books in a social way (if one wants; one can also use the platform so that nobody else can see your activity) to use Bookwyrm (https://bookwyrm.social), which is completely open-source and actively maintained by very kind people—you can host your own #Bookwyrm instance, which is BTW built on ActivePub—to whom I donate money to keep the site rolling; no ads, no tracking.

There's also The StoryGraph (https://www.thestorygraph.com) that was created by people who were fed up with Amazon and their #SurveillanceCapitalism. The system is closed-source and actively maintained.

The best epic fantasy book I have read in a while. Tons of names, tribes, nations, cities, countries, factions, individuals clash in a massive once-in-a-millennium undertaking. What more does a bookworm need? Simply top-shelf stuff, imho.

This started as a burst binding and I converted it to sewn on flat cords. I was reading this during my off time at a recent class at the American Academy of Bookbinding and decided I wanted to take a swing at breaking down this type of binding since so many of the books I enjoy are published this way. There are signatures after all...there's just also A LOT of glue...

A question for the crowd:

I have curated this list of public domain folk tale collections from around the world on Wikisource, and I am contemplating turning this into lists - which would include creating entries for the books at OpenLibrary.

However, I am not sure how granular these lists should be. Should I arrange them by continent or by country or what?

Any suggestions?

@independentpen @AimeeMaroux I'm not much of an expert on #Bookwyrm , but I think cascading lists with sub-lists aren't possible. A work is either within a list, or not.

Also, I can only include whole books (or other distinct works) in Bookwyrm lists - separating individual tales would definitely be too granular.

#Bookwyrm question: Is there some markup for referring to a specific book, instead of a specific user?

That is to say, if you are commenting on a particular book and want to link to or recommend another book, it would be fairly neat to simply add a markup-link to that other book within the local Bookwyrm library instead of posting an URL.

🧵 Unbelievable: Robin Wall Kimmerer's gorgeous book "Braiding Sweetgrass" was published 10 years ago. Unlike other global bestsellers, the book has changed people, woken them up and inspired them to take action. Rosanne Deerchild talks with the author in her podcast Unreserved:

Ladies, if you would like to gain access to this library: I'm still single! I just thought I should throw this out there. 😁

More seriously, organizing my collection of physical books was long overdue, and #Bookwyrm made a useful tool for this purpose. My excuse for collecting so many books in the first place (apart from the pleasure of reading itself, of course) was that I wanted to use them as a research tool for my assorted projects - but this doesn't work if I keep losing track of what books I actually have. And now this should no longer be a problem.

I'm not sure yet how much of my ebook collection (which is several times larger) I will integrate into my Bookwyrm list. Time will tell, I suppose...

Reader question: As a reader what makes you want to start a book? A stunning cover? A great summary? Seems interesting? Funny? Other?

For me, I'll read anything as long as it seems interesting, like it has some real thought and effort put into the story.

Please help.

I am looking for the most privacy friendly way to buy ebooks.

Every shop and platform I've looked at would index and sell my purchase and a lot of other information.

I can get my ebooks in different ways but I explicitly want to pay the author for their work without me and my behavior ending up a resell product for which ever platform I use to complete this purchase.

Any ideas?

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@Firlefanz

Ah I had not considered that yet.

Would love a way to directly purchase from authors on a privacy friendly platform.

Seems to me to be the only way to liberate the reading world from big tech.

It's not too hard to imagine some sort of with purchasing options?

There must be something out there...

Really prefer to pay with money instead of my privacy.

Again, if any one has any ideas?
