Feeling something is missing from your #fediverse experience?
Give these a try - they might have the features you're looking for:
Firefish features : feed customisation, generous (3k) character allowance in posts, blogging, quote posts, emoji reactions and custom emojis, threaded replies, polls , content warnings, hashtags, markdown with text/image animations, cloud storage for images media used in posts, chat channels, private messaging, private chat. (private as in not in your timeline, not as in encrypted.)
Bonfire features: made up of people and projects cooperating to build interoperable and extensible apps, that can easily plug and play with each other.
Bonfire apps are open source and modular, meaning they’re made of building blocks you can use to create your own custom apps or extensions. Customise the design, the code, or any aspect, and contribute your improvements to the community.
Misskey features: generous (3k) character allowance in posts, blogging, quote posts, emoji reactions , threaded replies, content warnings, hashtags, markdown, cloud storage for images and media, data visualisation, customisable via widgets.
Akkoma polls, content warnings, hashtags, markdown, unlimted post edits, post quoting
Lemmy features: vote scores (old Reddit style), tagging both user or community, magazines
Note:
I’m writing this post because I feel all of these deserve a bit more of the oxygen of publicity than they currently get. I don’t use all of these platforms, all info given about features I pulled from the main instances - if you feel I’ve missed an important feature let me know and I’ll update the info.
This is my #Facebook exit plan - an open source social network that can be self-hosted yet follow accounts from the entire #fediverse. Seeing how hard it is for people to ditch Shitter, Fb will take much, much longer. But I want more control over my data.
an extensible open source #federated#social networking toolkit, that empowers communities to easily configure their spaces from the ground up.
There is still time to see this and other #fediverse app demos, and join in what will likely be dozens of #unconference sessions over two half days online.
once #bonfire will be ready for general use, it will take the #fediverse by storm, and it is highly likely to find a dedicated following in the global south for obvious reasons
This is not a microblogging example, but Livejournal and Dreamwidth has custom privacy settings that you can set up, and I miss that on every other social media I am on. This just made me think of it
@geraineon
the bonfire campground is a lovely, very friendly, not yet fully federated place > over there, many things are not yet ready for production, but the bonfire camp proceeds steadily
regarding streams: it is kind of an offshoot of hubzilla, using the same protocol (zot), which is not activitypub > zot allows for nomadic identity (i.e. multiple accs being managed simultaneously) > streams has implemented comment permissions, so that e.g. cryptospam is simply impossible by design #bonfire#streams#fediverse
Activity on the fedi must be on the upswing. Hosting costs (storage, CDN, translation, backups) are way higher than they’ve been in a long time. Looks like more cost optimization is what I’ll be doing next week during vacation. 💸
You are definitely well-connected to the underpinnings of the Fediverse and probably know about planned direction.
Are there plans to make funding all the pieces of the Fediverse (bw, hw, sw, labor) more automatic and integrated into the signup?
I give funds to 2 instances, an infosec person, and ValueFlows dev for a total of $40.35/mo. PayPal and Patreon were easy to set up. It was really hard to figure out how to fund what I think is a critical piece of ensuring longevity of the Fedi-- distributing funds within. The #Bonfire instance gave me the link to VF. Really knowledgeable, involved people are working on VF. I'm not a Dev, but docs there look like it could serve Fedi fund distribution. https://hrea.io/
Are there other plans for making funding better integrated into the Fedi? IMO, systematic financing is the weakest link to a sustainable Fediverse.
Hmmm, non-federating ActivityPub servers might actually be a good alternative to sth like Discord for (semi-)closed communities. Better in some ways even since people get to pick how to access it, via web interface or an app of their choice. And a follow-model maybe scales better for larger groups than everyone speaking over each other in channels.
Probably needs local-only posts though (which is still not integrated into mainline Mastodon, grumble, grumble)
:Blobhaj_Thinking:
Edit: of course it would work without local-only posts, because it's not federating. Should have been obvious … 🤦♀️
#Bonfire looks absolutely bangin. Haven’t tried it out yet, but great to see more fediverse software appearing, especially with new ways of doing things.
Some interesting features I’m not sure I’ve seen elsewhere:
define ‘circles’ and ‘boundaries’ for your relationships
create tasks and task lists
multiple identities per account
custom user roles
shared account access (good for orgs/business accounts)
All this conversation about #Meta on #Fedi feels like the worst parts of geek culture. So technical, without understanding context or what strikes can actually do. My thoughts:
Meta will make a great app for Fedi because it has more money to throw at the task. People will start using that because it's better. It will have QTs and an algorithm. People they want to follow will be there.
Spent my first few days around here trying to figure out a fair share "#subscription". Very few provide an idea of how much would help. sfba.social said about $1000/mo in cost to sustain service (excluding labor). Set up my $10.35/mo for ecosystem infrastructure there.
Knowing an ecosystem needs an immune system, decided to Patreon an infosec person on fedia.io at $10/mo.
An ecosystem also needs a way to move the energy source around the system. Spent some time trying to find where that might be in the #Fediverse. Patreon, Kofi and et al. seem to be the most prominent means at the moment. Found #Bonfire whose protocol includes the #ValueFlows vocabulary. AFAIK, this is closest to an energy transport system for the Fediverse. Maybe there are other vocabularies for creating a circulatory system in the Fediverse.
https://forum.holochain.org/ seems to be where deployments of ValueFlows are being worked (moved to #discord). Exploring more before setting up a subscription.
