gauging the mood of a nation by its broadcasts 2:

Where did empathy go?

The Revolution will be Televised (first broadcast August 2012)
Two young men use hidden camera work to turn the spotlight on corporate greed and corruption.

Benefits Street (first broadcast January 2014)
entire streets content to be dole scroungers, not even looking for work.

In 2008 investment bankers Lehman Brothers collapsed, the fallout caused the 2010 banking crash and the UK government stepped in to pay bailouts to several financial institutions, a debt every inhabitant of the Uk, adult and child, still owes.

The media narrative moved from people being angry at banking bailouts and banker bonuses, to the chronically unemployed and from thence to the chronically disabled.

Whether or not you support independence for Scotland, you must surely support the principle of democratic choice. In which case every person in Scotland meeting a prospective MP or their campaigners from whichever party must ask them these three simple questions.

  1. Is the union voluntary?
  2. Can Scotland leave?
  3. How does Scotland leave if it wants to?
Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@Indyposterboy
Of the parties around we know at least 3 are only interested in maintaining a presence in Westminster, which precludes giving a toss about issues in any of the countries with local assemblies.

We need to work more together with those same countries as we share the same issues nationally.

We need to go on doing what we have been - support parties that take independence seriously.

Finally we also need to focus on alternatives to the UK media, getting fact checked information is essential imo.

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@Indyposterboy
Scotland, in one way or another, has been looking for self determination since the late 1800s. It took 100 years give or take a few years to actually get a devolved assembly.

I've previously posted on, imo, what options we have

but I'll recap -

we self declare as a sovereign state, which relies on international recognition of which there are examples round the world where this has gone well and where it hasn't. It's risky.

The alternative - politically we treat the Union as uncivil and unrepresentative of our issues, and start stepping on toes by governing as if we have free reign.

Either way, it's been made abundantly clear that Westminster will return party or parties with a majority which will be looking to reduce our autonomy regardless of what we do.

Westminster know the issues in Scotland, they just refuse to address them in the hope they'll go away.

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@Indyposterboy

Except we have the added urgency of 2 parties trying on "patriotism", one out going and one hoping to be incoming.

Labour stiffed devolution once already in 1979, I don't trust them not to do it again - especially under Starmer.

Linked is a short video of the closing stage of last year's Orange lodge Big Walk in Glasgow, particiapants happily singing the famine song telling Catholics to go back to Ireland because the potato famine is over. The point of the "walks", wherever they are held, is to forcefully remind Catholics they are "other" and unwelcome.

Ian McNeil local Labour councillor for Airdrie South, is also executive officer of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland. The only full-time salaried role in the Lodge.

Henry Dunbar (pictured with Anas Sarwar, not in the lodge but merely leader of Labour's branch in Scotland) who retired from the Lodge just before becoming a local Labour councillor for Aidrie North. Having been Scotland’s most senior orangeman from 2010 to 2016 as Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland and the most senior orangeman in the world, from 2015 as its Imperial President.

See if you can spot ether of them among the auld yins in orange cuffs and sashes. But if you can't, rest assured they are both deep in a culture that defines itself by hating catholics whilst also being Labour councillors.

This is NOT a ‘reserved' matter. From the Times (hardly a lover of Scotland)

'However, Sources told The Irish Times however that the reason was entirely political in that the UK government did not want to be seen agreeing a deal with an EU nation, especially with a general election looming.’

Oddly enough, earlier this week I was posting something about the 5 Techniques and included the lyrics of the Gang of Four Song "Ether" which is about the techniques being used against detained Republicans in Long Kesh.

Anyway the closing lyric of the song is about "oil under Rockall" and I started looking into what they were getting at. Suffice to say in 1955 the UK sent a group of squaddies to live there for the minimum number of days to legally say the island was inhabited, apparently done to stop the Russians from setting up a spy post as the rock was on the flight path of nuclear missile test and annexed it. Ireland, Iceland and Clam Mackay have all disputed the validity

J. Abrach Mackay in 1955:
"My old father, God rest his soul, claimed that island for the Clan of Mackay in 1846 and I now demand that the Admiralty hand it back. It's no' theirs."

While Gang of Four were simply hypothesising about oil resources, it seems they were on to something.

NB: I'm not saying community service is a bad thing. Far from it. But it should never be compulsory.

I earned my Queens Scout Award from age 14-18, which involved hundreds of hours of community service. It's valuable, educational and humbling, but it shouldn't be handed out as a punishment, or used as slave labour.

If the point of is education, make it part of schooling. Learning by doing, in the community, while at school? Sure, but we don't call that

It's the focus of Sorley McLean's 1982 "Sgreapadal" dealing with the stark contradiction of the idyllic beauty of the landscape and the black history of the enforced use of the land - from the clearances through to the British military.
