Raphael was not only one of the most prolific & influential painters of the Italian Renaissance but also an accomplished architect.

This growing interest & his familiarity w/ Roman antiquities was visible in several of his works.

A remarkable oil painting, Chalice of Saint John the Evangelist, by Nederlandish artist Hans Memling, 1470/1475.

His paintings were quite a hit in Renaissance Italy and influenced some of Raphael's paintings as well.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 131.

Like all good #arthistory, Eunice Lipton's Looking into Degas: Uneasy images of women & modern life (1986) encourages you to look again at the work it discusses. Examining how Degas portrayed #women, Lipton offers a materialist reading of the subject, but a nuanced reading of Degas' social engagement. This is a well-illustrated & compelling but of analysis that I highly recommend to anyone interested in the #artist - enlightening stuff

This is a bit off-topic, but today, I can proudly announce that I'm the new owner of a larger #Norwegian #ExLibris collection. Since I was a child, I've been intrigued by this art form & during my years in Berlin, I was part of the ExLibris society's exchange events.
It's a great honour & a great responsibility to own such a collection. There is no collector/artist scene in Norway for ExLibris, but perhaps my work w/ the collection can be an incentive. #Woodcut #Linocut #BookHistory #ArtHistory

This week I've been manly reading, no. 128.

Having really enjoyed Jackie Wullschlager's recent book on Monet, I decided to go back & read her Chagall: Love & Exile (2008), despite having no real interest in the #artist. Once again its a really compelling combination of #arthistory & #biography which has shifted my view of Chagall considerably. As with the Monet, Wullschlager clearly indentifies the role of #women in the artist's life & accords them their due. Another great bio!

HELP: looking for sources on fascist aesthetics. Why fascists (Nazi Germany, other fascist countries, and current fascist movements) like minimalism, Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and architecture, and “elegant” beauty.

And why they banned the kinds of art they banned.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 127.

Published in Reaktion's Renaissance Lives series, David Ekserdjian's book Albrecht Durer: Art & Autobiography (2023) is built on the premise that Durer was one of the first really self-aware artists (rather than craftsmen). Sadly, this themes gets lost among the more detailed #arthistory around #paintings & #prints. Overall while this is a reasonable survey, it misses the opportunity to really develop the (supposed) central theme.

Fourth, to do this – combining micro and macro perspective – one needs to take an inter- and multi-disciplinary approach. #NewDiplomaticHistory greatly benefits from other disciplines or sub-disciplines, such as #politicalscience, #arthistory literary studies, #linguistics, #historyofideas or history of medicine, to name but a few. Finally, #emdiplomacy research needs to take up a global perspective that “challenges our self-evident beliefs and prevents us from being lured by the master narrative of #diplomacy as European innovation".

Gebke concludes by encouranging us not only to take a look at different (sub-)disciplines when researching #earlymodern diplomacy, but also to work in teams in order to connect the micro with the macro perspective. (6/6)
