The male-dominated art establishment has always used Pablo Picasso’s “genius” to marginalize women. On the 50th anniversary of his death, this is the only show to challenge that.

EA Hornel was the Kirkcudbright Artist who began inspiring other Artists to come and visit, paint and live in Kirkcudbright, creating it's status as an Artist's Town. Steadfast in his refusal to go to the big city to ply his trade, he lived most of his life in the town, up to his death

This painting, a celebration of the English language, was created by a British painter Ford Madox Brown in 1847-1851. Chaucer, the ‘father of English literature’, is reading lines from The Canterbury Tales to King Edward III, who first championed the English language over the French.

I was asked again this week what the writer Alice Thornton (1626-1707) looked like. In 1875 her descendants, the Combers, had a portrait in their possession: 'The picture is not a striking one. It represents a middle-aged lady, clad in widow's weeds, which she probably wore to the end of her days' (Jackson, xiv). Perhaps like the image below? Any tips on how to track down missing portraits much appreciated! #17thCentury #arthistory @histodons @histodon @Arthistory4all

A year ago today, the world lost an artistic gem.

Lyubov Panchenko - born in Bucha, Ukraine, 1938 - died in Bucha, 2022.

During her life she travelled Ukraine, exploring the traditional folk art of her country. She produced watercolours, collages, designed embroidery and dresses. In her later years, she received the Vasyl Stus prize.

When Albert Bierstadt painted Rocky Mountain Landscape in 1870, he had not seen the Rockies for seven years. He worked from studies made in 1863, during his second trip to the West. In Rocky Mountain Landscape the shopworn adjectives "spellbinding" and "breathtaking" regain their identity, conveying the awestruck wonder the artist induces in the viewer.

Geesje Kwak was Breitner's favourite model until she emigrated to South Africa at a young age. Kwak often posed in Japanese kimonos Breitner had bought after seeing an exhibition of Japanese prints in The Hague.

His fascination with Japonisme was shared by contemporaries like Manet, Monet and Van Gogh. The folding screen is also an expression of this interest.

The pot pictured below is one of my favourite pit fired pieces of pottery. .

Pit firing is the original method for firing clay pots and dates back 30,000 years. Colouration comes from combustible materials that are burned. As these materials burn, vapours are released. Hot pots, still porous take the colour.

I do a pit firing once a year and I love feeling connected to the dawn of my chosen craft.
