Mastodon really needs to catch up.

"Quote and reply controls appear to be bundled together in a single dropdown menu, where users can open the conversation to “Anyone,” or limit it to “Profiles you follow” or “Mentioned only.”"

mima, to threads

I don't like this move by . Limiting who can do pretty much defeats the purpose of quote posts in the first place.

Oh well, I'm confident that will not adopt this beyond not allowing blocked users to quote a post by the user blocking them (which I disagree with btw), so this will not affect me thankfully and I can still quote Threads users as long as they haven't blocked me. :seija_coffee:

If every article, podcast episode and video was natively an post, we'd need quote posts but want them to operate differently. They should count as a boost but with a clear indication that the person you are following also wants you to see their comment. How should that look? Maybe they wouldn't themselves be boostable...

@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@wjmaggos Interesting concept. Perhaps boosting should be off by default, but by accepting the author could make quote posts boostable again? 🤔

I have seen the downsides of the Quote Post feature on Threads lately. There it is in even wider, in constant use, because there is no shares shown on your profile.

Quoting a post often puts others in a spotlight and not always in very flattering way. I have made that mistake myself as well. It doesn’t feel good if you criticize someone this way and people start slandering and it’s out of your control. I sometimes feel like a bully using it.

So if/when we ever get a Quote Post functionality here on Mastodon, I hope it will be different. Perhaps in this case the problem is Threads and the algorithm and not the feature itself though.

toddalstrom,
@toddalstrom@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle At least three apps already support and it's definitely coming to Mastodon core.

Is the problem folks have with quotes/quote-boosts that the person quoted gets a notification?

Or that the quoted post gets visually formatted as a post. Or both?

I see these as two separate features, and I'd be personally fine with just the preview without a notification, which is what some apps do, I believe.

FinchHaven,
@FinchHaven@sfba.social avatar

@stefan

Can't believe I'm even getting started with this again, because this specific point seems to be utterly irrelevant to all the men who want / or whatever you want to call them and who don't care how they're used

The problem is that women with opinions would be quote posted to cc lists of misogynist, incel males all of whom would proceed to brigade her for hours and hours with vivid, angry threats

I saw it happen repeatedly on Twitter

"Oh, well, she should just and all of them then!"

Yeah

Women with unpopular opinions should spend all their time on social media fighting a rear-guard action against woman-haters who are attacking them in packs

Or maybe never stick their necks out again, which is the desired effect

"Sit down and shut up, bitch, but fix me a sammich first!"

As we know, aren’t really a thing in (yet, hopefully) but in my phases of trying out different mastodon clients I have noticed that one of them actually gives you the option to ‘quote post’ something — but how is an iOS client able to have the feature when mastodon as a whole does not? If anybody knows/has knowledge about this and could shed some light on it, that’d be super cool. I’ve just always wondered.

So here I am ‘quote posting’ this Washington Post article just to go over to my other mastodon client, mammoth to see what it looks like. If anybody sees this and cares any amount at all, feel free to let me know what it looks like on your end! I just want to know if it actually works as a quote post on the other side of things. Because if so, well then Ice Cubes is awesome but again how does that work?

P.s. I’m so glad I moved back to the InfoSec instance. I never have to worry about running out of space when posting now. So, randomly, if you see this — thanks Jerry! 😂

Mima is right, we should link to toots. It is kind of a way around the absence of "quote tooting".

However, I have recently learned that, by design, Mastodon doesn't automatically share all toots across all instances, and we are essentially not seeing most of the Fediverse depending on how active people on our instance are.

If you really want to make sure everyone that can see your toot can also see your quoted toot, boost it first. Or use a screen grab.

jupiter_rowland, to mastodon

Mastodon might introduce a "proprietary", home-brew "No quote-toots allowed" flag outside the ActivityPub standard that probably won't be documented anywhere. Just like their "sensitive image" flag, but even more critical.

And if that happens, all Fediverse projects that have a quote-post/quote-boost/quote-tweet/quote-toot/share feature will have to have that flag reverse-engineered from Mastodon's source code and implemented a functionality that greys out the corresponding button under "no quote-toot" posts. And all their instances will have to upgrade to a version that fully supports that flag before Mastodon rolls out that flag. Or else Mastodon will defederate all their instances for being non-compliant.

This will at least affect Friendica and everything that can be traced back to it, including Hubzilla and (streams), as well as Misskey and everything that can be traced back to it, including Firefish whose development is dead and dozens upon dozens of other Forkeys.

If this actually comes, and if it's enforced immediately after release with no grace period, Mastodon could just as well fully be defederated from the rest of the Fediverse due to being incompatible. It'd cause a rift between Mastodon and the non-Mastodon Fediverse anyway because the former would have a requirement for federation which the latter is incapable of fulfilling.

Screenshotting this post 👇🏻 in order to quote post it! I don’t know where people get the idea that quote posting = dunks, personally I feel that that opinion is just Twitter brain.

Every major social platform from Tumblr, to Facebook, to LinkedIn and more has the ability to natively quote post. This is because the primary use of such a feature is to amplify information w added context or to open a new line of discussion. Replies are used far more often for harassment but we don’t ban replies!

Quote posts—which have already been implemented in several other Fedi projects and even some Mastodon clients—are on the Mastodon roadmap for 2024.

I'm looking forward to using this feature, but even more than that I hope its arrival in mainline Mastodon will finally put paid to the obtuse and often bad-faith arguments against the feature that were rampant a year ago.

Been a heavy user of all the Twitter alternatives for a minute now and I gotta say Mastodon is my favorite. There are definitely some features I’d like to see here (like quote posts and a DM inbox), but the community on Mastodon seems to have the best vibe and there are so many smart techies that it’s been the most helpful for finding sources.

petrescatraian,

@taylorlorenz don't be shy on testing waters on other based platforms as well. You get the same audience and the same people, while enjoying these platforms' particular features. Friendica, for example, has a inbox already, as well as .

You can also add titles to your posts, as well as format your text using or , and many other features that haven't made their way into Mastodon just yet (or were already for years when Mastodon added them). Not to mention you can write texts as long as your heart desires, as there's no limit on them (and they appear just as long on Mastodon).

A good and fairly popular Friendica server is venera.social

Edit: and yes, I am on Friendica. Writing to you from Friendica as well. The server I'm on, libranet.de, uses a less stable version of it. venera.social has the same admin but uses the current stable release.

You know what you don’t hear much about anymore? The debate about quoted posts. Is there still anyone that doesn’t get it? The viewing and impact is FAR greater when people can see what you’re referring to. Now almost a year in since “the migration,” I don’t think most of the offended even question that value anymore since they’ve seen it in so many ways, or faked with images, like I and many do. I am sure someone will disagree. That’s fine. But then sit down :)

Meh. on roadmap since March-ish?. Github you cite shows no discussion of devs implementing, just talk, raising same reactionary safety issues. And I’ve been told privately that Eugn has little interest in it, despite his posts considering it. So I wouldn’t hold my breath. QPs are used on X, Bluesky & threads daily now with zero complaints. Unless Masto supports it, and soon, journos and pro-sharers will be too settled elsewhere.

Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, I’d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on ppl’s points, etc. You just can’t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?

deltatux,

@taylorlorenz it is on the roadmap for but if this feature is needed now, I really recommend you to check out instances running on & , both offer out of the box. It also has other features that Mastodon is missing like text formatting, threaded comments & more!

As they're both implementations, you won't lose the ability to communicate with your current follows & followers.

Mastodon’s lack of quotes and search does not prevent organized harassment campaigns.

Having now witnessed targeted harassment campaigns on the Fediverse multiple times—and also being a target of it—I see that the lack of quotes and search doesn’t inhibit harassment campaigns in any way.

If the mob is in search of a target, not only will they find you, they will use technology outside of the Fediverse to do it—including Google search, Discord chat, etc.

The only thing I’ve seen that stops targetted harassment campaigns is blocking at the individual and server wide-level, and also comment controls such as the ability to turn off replies.

In the end, it’s not lack of technology that prevents online harassment. It’s technology.

unchartedworlds,

@Brendanjones @atomicpoet

Quote-posts also enable or support some types of useful contribution.

•"I want to introduce this, with a bit of context for people not already familiar with the field."

•"I'm starting a new topic, tangentially connected with this one."

•"I want to endorse this post in a specific way."

•"This post is important, & I also know that some of the people who follow me would benefit from a content note on it, so I'll add one."
