About the assumptions we make in #DeepTime.

It is a mistake to think of #nature as warm and cuddly. Many, perhaps most, #violent encounters between #humans and #wildlife are the result of the former treating the latter as #Disney characters.

One reason “#birds are #dinosaurs” made immediate sense to me was a vivid childhood memory: when I was about ten, I thought some #goslings were cute and wanted to pet them. #Mother #Goose had other ideas. Yeah, don’t do that.

It is equally a mistake to assume nature is All #Killing, All The Time. Fighting takes a lot of energy, and wild animals—including our own distant ancestors—are in constant peril of #starvation. Even a minor #injury can lead to #infection and #death.

Violence is a tool of survival, to be sure, whether in #predation, self-defense, or squabbles over #territory and #mating. Unnecessary violence is a quick road to #extinction. Most animals would rather do something else, when they can.

So before you fall back on “red in tooth and claw” as a default, look for other explanations. They’re usually more interesting anyway.

Increased Infection Risks
After COVID-19 Infections
@whn

This spiral of infections and their consequences is not sustainable. The health of the population will continue to deteriorate. We have measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 [5]; why not use them?

My furnace has failed.

I get to have a bunch of people in my house shortly to replace it before the Big Ontario Freeze descends on Saturday.

I feel like - I am having a constant dialogue with my threat & risk assessment module.

I will have to treat my home as a biohazard environment for most of a day.

& HEPA & oh my.

Replacing a furnace on a pipe-busting deadline is complicated & stressful.

Doing it while in today's world is 10x more complex and 100x more stressful.

If you recall my sailing analogy, we have to have a formal family safety briefing & contingency planning before it all gets started.

Then we have to maintain safety situational awareness while working a task on a deadline.

Time to break out my favourite and reports for to get the ball rolling:

Number of people in a room vs .

Last @MoriartyLab prevalence report was 1 in 13 or ~7.7% for Ontario.

That was for period ending Dec 29. Its definitely gotten worse.

I love the optimism of the early pandemic where 10% was considered top of the likely prevalence for risk assessment as shown by the chart.

Yay

Dr. Topol,
are you saying that mostly everyone who's just asymptomatic and tests negative for #Covid19 again after having recoveredfrom an #infection, should get a #booster shot right away and not wait the "customary" 6 months some countries' #CDC|s recommended last year?!?

You know who still wears an #N95 in December 2023 while giving a lecture? Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, whose peer-reviewed published research showed that #vaccination only modestly reduces the risk of #LongCovid. Two years ago, thanks in large part to his work, I knew something our #CDC still never talks about, that I still had half the risk of developing a miserable and <see self-reply with CW> health condition from an #infection that’s nearly unavoidable if you’re indoors unmasked around other people.

"Yes, Head Nurse!"
Tau looked worried as nine fervent nurses advanced on him, eyes gleaming.

Repeat infections increase risk of organ failure, death

A study (Nature Medicine, Nov. 10) indicates that the risk seems to increase with each . Senior author Al-Aly: "This means that even if you’ve had two COVID-19 infections, it’s better to avoid a third. And if you’ve had three infections, it’s best to avoid the fourth. Our findings [...] tell us that strategies to prevent or reduce the risk of should be implemented."
