It is a mistake to think of #nature as warm and cuddly. Many, perhaps most, #violent encounters between #humans and #wildlife are the result of the former treating the latter as #Disney characters.
One reason “#birds are #dinosaurs” made immediate sense to me was a vivid childhood memory: when I was about ten, I thought some #goslings were cute and wanted to pet them. #Mother#Goose had other ideas. Yeah, don’t do that.
It is equally a mistake to assume nature is All #Killing, All The Time. Fighting takes a lot of energy, and wild animals—including our own distant ancestors—are in constant peril of #starvation. Even a minor #injury can lead to #infection and #death.
Violence is a tool of survival, to be sure, whether in #predation, self-defense, or squabbles over #territory and #mating. Unnecessary violence is a quick road to #extinction. Most animals would rather do something else, when they can.
So before you fall back on “red in tooth and claw” as a default, look for other explanations. They’re usually more interesting anyway.
Increased Infection Risks
After COVID-19 Infections @whn
This spiral of infections and their consequences is not sustainable. The health of the population will continue to deteriorate. We have measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 [5]; why not use them?
Mutation testing in #PHPCSFixer is ready 🥳! When it's merged, all pull requests will be covered with #Infection and checked if added/modified files are mutants-proof. It will enforce really good tests quality (which already has been high with MSI=80).
Dr. Topol,
are you saying that mostly everyone who's just asymptomatic and tests negative for #Covid19 again after having recoveredfrom an #infection, should get a #booster shot right away and not wait the "customary" 6 months some countries' #CDC|s recommended last year?!?
You know who still wears an #N95 in December 2023 while giving a lecture? Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, whose peer-reviewed published research showed that #vaccination only modestly reduces the risk of #LongCovid. Two years ago, thanks in large part to his work, I knew something our #CDC still never talks about, that I still had half the risk of developing a miserable and <see self-reply with CW> health condition from an #infection that’s nearly unavoidable if you’re indoors unmasked around other people.

"’We noted gray matter alterations in both patients with #LongCovid and those unimpaired after a #covid19#infection,’ said [lead study author Alexander Rau]. ‘Interestingly, we not only noted widespread microstructural alterations in patients with long COVID, but also in those unimpaired after having contracted COVID-19.’”
"What's wrong with Tau?" Zaza asked.
Tau lay on his bed, looking listless.
"Tau doesn't feel well," Lusa said. "He got an #infection."
"Oh, no!" Bebe shrieked. "Is he going to die?"
"He's dying?" the other Angels howled, running in circles. "Oh, no!"
"It's just a little cough & fever," Lusa said.
"We can help!" Zaza said, making a quick adjustment on her device. "Combat nursing modules, stat!"
"Yes, Head Nurse!"
Tau looked worried as nine fervent nurses advanced on him, eyes gleaming.
The voice of the serpent/rain god spoke in a swirl of yellow leaves-- This world is under repair--Please try another way. We must clear the infestation, the infection of plagues and wars. There will be earthquakes and eruptions. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Repeat #COVID19 infections increase risk of organ failure, death
A study (Nature Medicine, Nov. 10) indicates that the risk seems to increase with each #infection. Senior author Al-Aly: "This means that even if you’ve had two COVID-19 infections, it’s better to avoid a third. And if you’ve had three infections, it’s best to avoid the fourth. Our findings [...] tell us that strategies to prevent or reduce the risk of #reinfection should be implemented."
