@LemmyKnowsBest not sure what you are picking up on, but I think our #mastodon server runs well partly because our admin works for Google and can bring his expertise over here. I have mixed feelings about that. He is very obviously a fan of the big tech companies and seemed a bit miffed that we all got so upset about #Threads trying to #federate
Hi, internet rando here... please reach out to your fellow journalists, and their organizations, please explain there is a way to take back the 4th estate.
We've been discussing these issues, amongst others lately in the Fediverse-City room on Matrix, what with the relative demise of Meetup.com following its acquisition by WeWork, and the rise of *events over at Faceplant further obviating them having much to do with a plethora of event management projects exploding onto the scene for the past couple of years.
It's been a while since I've visited #Faceplant, so long in fact, I only recently became aware a couple of years ago that they had a marketplace that has largely supplanted craigslist, and finding out just today that they in fact have some sort of events system - that speaks volumes, I think, toward my dedication to dogfooding my #FOSS and simply ignoring, for the most part, there are still some privacy disrespecting operators in the deprecated monolithic silo space of social networking.
#Mobilizon, #Hubzilla, #Rebased, and #Friendica have their own take on how these event management systems should #Federate through the rest of the #Fediverse, while others mentioned in the article below, including #WordPress try to fit into that niche in a cooperative, interoperable way... and it's paying off. Bigtime.
It's a good read, events are powerful for hobbyists, technologists, sports enthusiasts, and just about any kind of IRL or remote attendance awareness and organizing; so it only stands to reason that #DeSoc, and social networking in general include the capabilities to seamlessly propagate events as globally possible.
At the very least, events are heralded as one of the best ways to get free pizza 🍕 and beer 🍺 with others that have common interests. After a veritable shitload of funding from many sources, including NGI0 and even larger corporate sponsors, we're approaching a place where anyone with a Fediverse account, even on the smolweb or most obscure platforms like Threads, will be privy to things like announcements, RSVP, alerts, Etc., of upcoming events, regardless of whether your Fediverse platform of choice directly supports event management.
And it is perhaps a little ironic, that #Threads users themselves will likely have at their disposal, an event notification and management capability in direct conflict with the one that Meta wants them to use - I dunno how that's going to work out, but I think it's pretty kewl that nobody else does either at this time.
#tallship#Fediverse_City#NGI0 h/t to @silverpill for the heads up on the following article, he just always seems to know where that rabbit is hiding in the tophat and pulls it right out when it's most needed, lolz.
ALSO MASTO: You are free to make your own Masto instance & #federate w/ every #instance in existence incl. ones filled w/ hate speech that your current instance almost guaranteed already defederates from.
I've been struggling with #kbin/#mastodon#federation for awhile now, it's been disheartening. I've been trying to be more active about following various users and domains in hopes that more content will #federate to the #magazines I moderate. However, it hasn't really proven to be helpful. In some cases, I can't even find particular instances that users post from via kbin. I can find the instance by going to the page itself, but I suppose it may just take more time than I thought? In some cases, trying to follow a user takes me to an error page, and repeated attempts prove unsuccessful. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it's rather confusing when I can see posts from a given instance, yet can't search for the instance itself to federate more content. I've tried asking about it, and no one seems to know or be able to help. Searching the fediverse for information is also difficult due to the noise I have to sift through.
With that said, I know there's other stuff to consider: Ernest is planning a big update for kbin, some instances have restricted federation with kbin due to moderation not properly federating to other communities, and kbin being a younger platform than #lemmy/mastodon. I'll try to be patient, there's just some features that I really hope mature soon as there are features I'd like to use, but can't yet. Also, before this gets misconstrued again like it has in the past, I am still enjoying my time on kbin and support Ernest's efforts in regard to this platform. I wouldn't still be posting here if I weren't enjoying my time here.
Just wanna say I agree - it can be a frustrating process to figure it all out.
In some cases, trying to follow a user takes me to an error page, and repeated attempts prove unsuccessful.
This confused the fuck out of me until I realized that Mastodon instances have the option for users to allow or deny follow requests. Basically, if you click on someone's follow and nothing happens (or you get an error page), what's happened is that you've sent them a follow request that they have to approve. Kbin's interface fails here (hopefully will improve with update) and does nothing. If they do chose to let you follow them, you'll see their account update.
In some cases, I can't even find particular instances that users post from via kbin.
Go to the poster's account, and follow them. If Kbin hasn't actively federated the site yet, it usually does so pretty quickly after a follow. This usually also lets you link to the community they posted to.
Check your magazine's Microblog section - you may be getting more content than you realize. Your magazine tags will determine what additional content (aside from #yourmagazinetitle) your Microblogs pick up. Everything from Mastodon users shows up there on Kbin.
So, Threads is in the news. The BBC reports that Mark Zuckerberg promises "rolling out over the next few days" to release a functionally limited desktop version of the “flagging Threads app”. That'll do it. If you are breathlessly waiting for them to federate with Mastodon, seems like that is still scheduled for the second month of never ever.
@dansup This is cool, and I can't wait to test it, but unless it can magically federate with WhatsApp/iMessage/etc. or you manage to convince my aunts and uncles to switch, it's just another app in a crowded space that missed the network effect by about 10 years.
I think that at this point the only viable solution to #opensource#messaging is to lobby the EU so that it forces the big players to #federate.
MoP is open source software being designed to power libraries. It has two key features - the ability to create a #distributedlibrary, and the ability to #federate between many different libraries.
We'll handle each of these items separately, then dive into the tech stack, status, and later features!
If you'd like to get involved, please let me know!
Fediverse friends @alexis and @jo have documented the presence of vile fascist kill-list compiler accounts Moms for Liberty, Libs of Tiktok, Gays Against Groomers and PragerU on Threads. In the attached screenshot, Jo is dogpiled for harassment.
There will be many, many more like them. These accounts won't be banned from Threads, because they produce engagement. And engagement - of any kind, the more negative the better - is all the psychopaths who run Meta care about.
Now we see exactly what we're being pulled into. Facebook hasn't launched a big Mastodon. Instead, the fediverse instances that federate with it will become little Facebooks
@ophiocephalic@alexis@jo This is why I voted not to #federate with #Threads. It is pretty clear for servers if they comply by their rules. Meta will not follow those rules. We can start with federating, but it is a useless activity as Meta will violate the terms of most servers and not give a damn. They will have to be de-federated if our servers enforced the rules they put up.
@OutOnTheMoors I’m with you on this issue. Fedi tends to go for the isolationist instead of connectionist approach. It might be needed for minorities to feel at home, but it also makes less people able to discover that better communities are possible.
Everyone starts out using the most popular app (except if you’re very lucky). This is why I would #federate.
Just for the chance of those in the mainstream to discover there is more than what Meta touts as ”safe”.
Basically I #federate with every server, but after reading that #threads will only federate with big instances and smaller ones has to apply for #federation I think the big instances like #mastodon .social and others should block federation till #META will federate with every instance. Otherwise Threads starts with #censorship which is unacceptable.
If @Gargron accepts federation with Meta, knowing the try to control Fediverse, I assume this is the beginning of the end.
People who want to #federate with #Meta, I'm struggling with understanding why. Why is it so important to use your #Mastodon software to talk to them. Doesn't #Instagram and #Facebook have a by far superior native user experience? And it can be already used today.
If the goal is to connect all the surveillance-capitalism social networks with one protocol, isn't #bluesky a far superior alternative to do that?
Which there’s not even any evidence right now that this is the plan.
Now you also see why it’s such a bad idea to concentrate a large number of users on one server.
Just think, for those of you so paranoid about Meta and #Facebook, what do you think they would do if instead several million users weren’t concentrated on 2 or 3 servers but were spread out over 10,000?
Stop telling people to sign up for accounts on large servers and start supporting the little ones.
That’s how you save the fediverse, and that’s how you make it more resilient to attacks. Whether those attacks are from Meta, #Google, or whatever bogeyman is next on your list.
I created a magazine @VegetableGardening for my hobby and I'm trying to get the word out there. Unfortunately I can't seem to be able to "federate" it to Lemmy. I've tried searching with "all" enabled on lemmy.world and lemmy.ml, but all it does is show me my own comment mentionning the magazine on another federated magazine....
If it happens I'm going to need a second fediverse identity—one on an instance that is explicitly defederated from Zuckerberg's empire, to use for socializing with friends, and one that I will use only to broadcast ads for my work into Facebook-controlled territory.
(Because I need to market my work, but I don't shit where I eat.)
Frankly, I can't see a whole lot of the private instance admins wanting to #federate with #Facebook. Maybe whats-his-name's big one (mastodon.social?).
So I'm guessing Meta would start offering to #pay instances to federate with them, at least at first, until they can get the network effects going.
It'll be interesting to see if it happens, and which admins are susceptible to the #bribe.
People of Mastodon, as you might have heard, #Eurovision takes place this Saturday.
Now normally I don't really care about that, but somehow I ended up in a situation where I have to watch it. Thank you @satsuma, @Kitty and my wife 😜
There are two options now: filter out #Mastovision and live your life, or join in #Mastovision and have some fun (or regrets) with us!
There might even be our own voting, who knows. Everything is possible!
People are in an uproar on #Bluesky as a nazi was causing disruption. People are calling for the bsky team to take a centralised action, some are saying to not even #federate which is the entire point. I’ve pointed out how #Mastodon has handled bad actors but clearly it’s not enough and all of the instances have failed
Just Curious: How long does it take for a kbin post to reach mastodon?
Or a thread to lemmy. Basically, how long does "federation" take?...
[Solved] Despite searching multiple times for my magazine on lemmy instances, I can't seem to find it. Am I missing something?
