What are you ready to lose to keep you & your family on an #Earth still livable for humans?
For the scientist Gianluca Grimalda, it's his job.
The extreme events we have experienced all around the world over the years are showing us the #urgency to reduce drastically our #CarbonEmissions and prevent #biodiversity loss.
Under the current #policies we are on a dead path. We all need to be a Gianluca Grimalda, agree on what's the most important and act accordingly.
Global #CarbonEmissions from electric power may peak this year, report says
"A new report on global #electricity generation found that the growth of #renewables was so rapid that it was close to the incredibly fast rate required if the world is to hit the tripling of capacity by the end of the decade that experts believe is necessary to stay on the 1.5C pathway."
"Rural voter anger at #NewZealand's environmental policies to tackle #ClimateChange and reduce #CarbonEmissions may contribute to a return of right-wing parties to power at an Oct. 14 election, a shift that could diminish the country's green image."
" #Swedish government faces backlash after slashing #climate budget - Move has drawn comparisons to the #UK, where Rishi #Sunak U-turned on environmental commitments
The Swedish government is facing a huge backlash – including threats of no-confidence votes against its climate minister – after slashing the country’s climate budget while admitting that it will dramatically increase carbon dioxide emissions.
The minority-run coalition, which has been in power for just under a year, announced on Wednesday it would be cutting funding for climate and environmental measures next year by 259m krona (£19m) and introducing tax cuts on petrol and diesel.
While long-term emissions are expected to decrease by 2045, the government is now expected to miss its 2030 transport targets.
By its own estimates, emissions will increase by 5.9m to 9.8m [a 67% increase!] tonnes of #CO2 equivalents by 2030 as a consequence of government decisions made between 1 July 2022 and 1 July 2023."
E-BIKE SAFETY: California Assembly Bill 1946 (Boerner Horvath) required the California Highway Patrol to develop statewide safety standards and training programs for users of e-bikes, on or before Sept 1, 2023.
"One bill — already approved by the [California State] Senate — would force about 5,300 #US corporations earning more than $1 billion and doing business in #California to annually report their global [greenhouse gas] #emissions that contribute to #ClimateChange.
Another bill that won Senate approval would require more than 10,000 companies with revenues exceeding $500 million to detail how climate change poses #FinancialRisks to their [worldwide] #operations."
"Big banks are bracing for a sweeping new climate law in California that would for the first time force them to calculate and disclose carbon emissions tied to lending. "
The Orkney islands are to test two electric ferries for commuting between its outlying islands as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions from shipping.
The battery-powered hydrofoil ferries, whose hulls are raised above the water, are part of a three-year, £15.5m demonstration project funded by the UK government, due to start in March 2024.
Github actions are designed with no CPU efficiency in mind.
It terrifies me how much time Github actions spent doing same things again and again in cases where it could easily be mitigated by cache and a good CI system design that targeted to spent resources effectively in general.
Unsurprisingly Github Actions billing is based on minutes spent repeatedly doing those things.
"A million ad impressions being served onto websites is the equivalent of a return flight from London to Boston in terms of the [carbon] emissions being given out. If you think about how many billions and billions of impressions are being served on a daily basis, we do have a problem..."
Nothing they’re saying about motorway speeds is new or extreme either. Just proven effective, good at reducing #AirPollution, slashing #CarbonEmissions, improving road safety, and makes well funded public transport more appealing.
“transport scientists from across Austria announced their support at the start of February for a 100km/h speed limit on motorways as a low-hanging fruit when it comes to lessening the environmental impact of the transport sector.”
“People can reach out to government officials to let them know how important Antarctic conservation is, and reduce their individual #CarbonEmissions,” says Bransome. They can also look for ways to spread the word to their #communities about the importance of the #Antarctic and #krill. A good time to start is World Krill Day on Aug. 11.
We also need more awareness about the importance of Antarctica and the #SouthernOcean in general, she says.
“New research using the latest figures for Canada’s methane emissions concludes it would be much cheaper for the energy industry to meet reduction targets for the potent greenhouse gas than it would be to pay carbon taxes on it.”
It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal (#CDR) like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:
Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?
A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.
Useful info thanks, just thinking about the impact of driving using the tree carbon uptake equivalents.
(UK figures) an average car emits about 5kg of CO2e per 20 miles (more for bigger, less efficient cars) so it takes a mature tree a year to absorb the carbon emitted for every 100miles driven.
