For the scientist Gianluca Grimalda, it's his job.

The extreme events we have experienced all around the world over the years are showing us the to reduce drastically our and prevent loss.

Under the current we are on a dead path. We all need to be a Gianluca Grimalda, agree on what's the most important and act accordingly.

What the world needs are enough affordable hydrogen-powered powered vehicles to satisfy humans' need for mobility.

The resource needed to produce the carbon-neutral fuel is abundantly present, even more with rising sea levels: Sea water!

" government faces backlash after slashing budget - Move has drawn comparisons to the , where Rishi U-turned on environmental commitments

The Swedish government is facing a huge backlash – including threats of no-confidence votes against its climate minister – after slashing the country’s climate budget while admitting that it will dramatically increase carbon dioxide emissions.

The minority-run coalition, which has been in power for just under a year, announced on Wednesday it would be cutting funding for climate and environmental measures next year by 259m krona (£19m) and introducing tax cuts on petrol and diesel.

While long-term emissions are expected to decrease by 2045, the government is now expected to miss its 2030 transport targets.

By its own estimates, emissions will increase by 5.9m to 9.8m [a 67% increase!] tonnes of equivalents by 2030 as a consequence of government decisions made between 1 July 2022 and 1 July 2023."

Github actions are designed with no CPU efficiency in mind.

It terrifies me how much time Github actions spent doing same things again and again in cases where it could easily be mitigated by cache and a good CI system design that targeted to spent resources effectively in general.

Unsurprisingly Github Actions billing is based on minutes spent repeatedly doing those things.

What’s the greenhouse gas impact of even a single day of the war in Ukraine, or similar conflicts?
I’ve thought about this from time to time over the years, but I’m glad this team is putting in the work to attach credible numbers to military emissions. The remark that they might be equivalent to those from the entire world’s passenger car fleet is sobering.

What do you think of these ideas? Extreme? Or bang on.

LETZE GENERATION, GERMANY DEMANDS: Payments to states of the Global South as compensation for climate change A permanent 9 euro travel ticket 100 km/h speed limit on the Autobahn "The state's actions are meant to intimidate, to frighten. But we cannot and will not allow ourselves to remain in this fear." WHY? The speed limit would reduce more than 6.7 million tons of CO2 a year Affordable public transportation would ease the cost of living crisis and reduce CO2
LETZEN GENERATION, AUSTRIA DEMANDS: That the Austrian government halt all new oil and gas licenses 100 km/h speed limit on the Autobahn "Austria consistently misses its climate targets and breaks the Paris Agreement. Fossil energy makes life expensive and destroys our future." WHY? Make roads safer and ensure less noise, emissions and particulate matter Fossil fuels will ensure the collapse of our agriculture, food supply, and democracy
DERNIÈRE RÉNOVATION, FRANCE ODERNIÈRE RÉNOVATION. DEMANDS: That the government commit to a comprehensive and energy-efficient renovation of all buildings by 2040 A "simple and progressive financing system" covering all the work for the poorest owners of these buildings *'It is now up tous, ordinary citizens, to enforce the commitments to which our government refuses to comply." WHY? Of the 750,000 renovations proposed by the government in 2021, fewer than 60,000 were carried out

It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal () like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:

Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?

A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.

Hellybootwader,
@Hellybootwader@mastodon.scot avatar

@davidho

Useful info thanks, just thinking about the impact of driving using the tree carbon uptake equivalents.

(UK figures) an average car emits about 5kg of CO2e per 20 miles (more for bigger, less efficient cars) so it takes a mature tree a year to absorb the carbon emitted for every 100miles driven.

So much scope to reduce emissions, and much easier than pulling carbon back out of the air again.
