Stop using Brave Browser

The Brave web browser has carved out a niche over the past few years as an alternative to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other mainstream web browsers. Some of that has come from its marketing as a privacy-preserving web browser, and it has also been repeatedly evangelized by cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

Your thoughts on this?

In private search we only have Brave and Duck Duck Go the later have been caught selling data but this seems shady especially number 2 and number 3 😬

Starting to question brave and some of their motives.

  1. Support private, independent search
  2. See search results ad-free
  3. Get a cleaner view on all results pages

    Brave browser: forte aumento delle installazioni dopo l'aggiornamento DMA di iOS nell'UE

    Brave ha registrato un forte aumento degli utenti che installano il suo browser Brave incentrato sulla privacy sugli iPhone dopo che Apple ha introdotto modifiche per aderire alla nuova legge europea sui mercati digitali.

    @informatica

    baddo71,

    @informapirata @informatica questo risultato dovrebbe spingere i programmatori di #brave ad implementare finalmente un motore di rendering diverso da quello di safari mobile. Cosi finalmente potremmo vedere come vanno i browser alternativi sotto ios. Peccato per #firefox potrebbe essere un incenttvo. Ma il ceo taglia taglia, pensa ai soldi e non a migliorare il prodotto. Ultimamente chi ha le risorse non possiede idee innovative, chi ha le idee innovative non possiede le risorse.

    Ultimamente sto ricominciando ad usare invece di come browser principale. Lo faccio un po' a malincuore, perché so bene che il browser di rappresenta l'ultima speranza per un web aperto e indipendente. Tuttavia come @filippodb ha spesso sottolineato, Brave è effettivamente più efficiente in termini di risorse e la mia esperienza di questi giorni gli dà ragione. La mia batteria si consuma molto più lentamente quando uso Brave.

    Rappel : À partir du mois de juin, Chrome (et ses dérivés) vont fortement se merdifier.
    En effet va entrer en vigeur le ManifestV3 de Google.

    Conséquences:

    • les bloqueurs de publicité seront limités à 30 000 règles, pas plus.
    • ils ne pourront plus se mettre à jour quotidiennement, mais seulement lors de publication de nouvelles versions des extensions (que Google met parfois jusqu'à 3 semaines à valider)

    Anyone else seeing this?

    As of yesterday, probably an upgrade in the last day or two, when loading an iPlayer page the play button shows a loading 'spinner' and after a few seconds disappears, presumably blocked by the latest Brave update I have: Version 1.62.156 Chromium: 121.0.6167.139 (Official Build) (64-bit).

    I can't find any reports of his on the web or at the Brave help center. 🤷‍♂️

    I just got to thinking this morning... I keep hearing about all these awful things like FLoC and Manifest V3 in #Chrome because Google's gonna Google and then I sip my coffee.

    Why? Because I use #Firefox and for the rare times I actually need a Chromium-based browser, #Brave.

    @mozilla gets a lot of flak, and while some criticism might be valid, I'm just grateful that someone works hard to not spy on me.

    I'm a Firefox user, but Brave Browser seems to be doing a good job of protecting its users as well.

    Here is a list of disabled Chromium features in Brave. Quite an interesting read.

    devSJR,
    @devSJR@fosstodon.org avatar

    @mkiol I also installed Browser as an additional tool. However, I only use it very rarely. As always, there is some criticism that keeps popping up. Among other things, that the lists are hand curated. So that certain actors like Facebook get data. I can't confirm or deny this.
    There have been claims of problems (data leak, crypto …) in the past: https://news.sophos.com/en-us/2020/06/09/brave-ceo-apologises-for-adding-affiliate-links-to-urls/ which appear to be fixed. I haven't found any good independent analyses of brave.

    devSJR,
    @devSJR@fosstodon.org avatar

    @mkiol No question. It's certainly always important to seek alternatives. However, #Brave is one of the examples (#Vivaldi, #Edge, #Chrome, #Chromium, #Bromite …), which I find also troubling because at the end of the day, it's focused on just one rendering engine. These are then monopolies, which are often not good for the user.
    #Mozilla's is actually the only competitor currently regarding rendering engines (#Gecko, #Quantum) to Google (#Blink. #WebKit).
