Uh, Oh! We've Ratcheted up to a threat now on Adblock and UblockOrigin...
Soft landings usually mean it doesn't hurt very much at first, then perhaps the event becomes more frequent and escalates to something that looks like the attached screenie...
When this happens, you may wish to avail yourself of some of the alternatives below.
Once you get here you're faced with trying options or even becoming disenfranchised. Switching to another browser is a prudent test, some have suggested pasting links into Incognito Mode tabs or logging out, while others have claimed that stock Brave Browser seems to humming along for them; and third party utils from among the list that follows:
Browser extension (a native, local, cross-platform solution):
AdNauseam
This last option is a simple browser extension that is apparently quite popular with folks, levying its own ethical pressure upon those who would force-feed you with data mined ad generation. The README file has some great information on the methodology incorporated.
On #Android, I haven't been presented with any of these foreboding pop ups warning me about blockers. I typically use #Brave or #Vivaldi Browser, they're stock, but I use the YouTube app more than I do any one of my browsers on my phones.
I also run the #DuckDuckGo"App Tracking Protection service". This is NOT#FOSS, so your choices are either installing from the #Aurora or Google Playstore, yet there's no requirement to use the #DDG browser to enable this protection - it's not for your browsers though (even DDG), it is designed to work with pretty much everything on your Android EXCEPT browsers; i.e., almost all of your installed apps, seamlessly, and since most folks stream YouTube videos through the Google YouTube Android app, I surmise that it targets and obliterates ads in the app (I haven't confirmed the veracity of that, it's merely supposition, but it blocks zillions of attempts by installed apps to phone home).
I'm Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, personal observations, and concerns; other toolsets or applications that meet your needs, and why you may have chosen those particular types of tools.
#BraveBrowser is installing VPNs without users' consent, even if you didn't willingly enable their #VPN service. Just stop using #Brave, it's garbage.
Edit: the services are disabled by default, but they were still installed with very little to no transparency about them towards the user, alongside all the other stuff that's often unwanted from Brave users (Pocket on Firefox is to blame too, lol.)
Good news! Brave for Android now let's u use your favorite uBlock Origin Blocklists!
Under Settings > Brave Shields & privacy
Can you now add custom filterlists and edit Brave's default selection of the already avaible filterlists. Some of you now that this was possible before too (via brave://adblock) but at this time it had no UI and wasn't a official feature, now you can easily add, remove and customize fiterlists via the the settings.
Reading about @scott's frustration regarding what browser to use, and I realised 1 thing I miss from the early web:
Browser innovation.
I know the browser wars sucked and developing for all of them sucked and yet - while the whole interop thing is wonderful for harmonising browser behaviour - there's not been anything new and truly disruptive.
Many new browsers build on chromium. Why not? Building from scratch would be a BIG challenge!
So are there any new independent browsers worth trying?
“Brave eliminated some positions as part of our cost management in this challenging economic environment. Several departments were affected, amounting to 9% of our staff.”
Blocking variations.brave.com which is used for A/B testing could potentially break Brave's functionalities. For me did Brave's "forgetful browsing" feature broke which seems to be disabled by default if you block this domain.
If you're mad at EFF for making it possible to use Chrome with less tracking instead of yelling at people to use a different browser, then I assume you have never heard of harm reduction. Giving people digital privacy and security advice means meeting people where they're at. Otherwise, you're just running your mouth to make yourself feel smart.
@evacide They’re extensions for Chromium browsers, not just Chrome. Some people need to use Chrome extensions, and I appreciate that EFF’s extensions work on Chromium browsers like #Vivaldi and #Brave.
I recently switched from #Brave#Browser to #LibreWolf... mostly like it but there is one thing that is likely going to cause me to go back to a chrome based browser.... it doesnt handle my 100 tabs very well.
On chrome no matter how many tabs i opened they would size shrink so they all fit... librewolf (and i presume all FF based browser) give me about 20 tabs i can see and then i have to scroll throught hem... As someone who has hundreds of tabs open that just is unmanageable...
@freemo #LibreWolf is great. I currently use it along with #Firefox#Tor and #Brave. Testing out the #Mullvad browser currently and it seems to be a solid choice. But I prefer them all to compartmentalize.
Way to protect and serve! I'm sure the people of #Birmingham, #Alabama are sleeping a little easier tonight knowing that their #brave#police are out there keeping the streets safe from #highschool marching bands that terrorize the community with their reckless and deadly performances following school #football games. These #officers deserve commendations, promotions, and raises for their selfless acts.
