MongoDB's SSPL (Server Side Public License) sounds like an extremely strong copyleft form of free software license. It sounds like MongoDB took the AGPL and made it much stronger.

Respected "open source" groups have rejected MongoDB's copyleft open source free software license, such as the OSI, RedHat, and Debian.

The criticism of the SSPL do not seem to recognize that it is a copyleft free software license. Is the OSI really a protector of copyleft free software? The politics of these organizations seem to leaning anarcho-capitalist "libertarian".

I don't believe the SSPL will harm any specific field of endeavor. Databases are used in all fields of endeavor. They are usually one of many provided cloud computing services. Cloud computing services are used in most every field of endeavor these days. Even my toothbrush has a cloud database.

By rejecting the SSPL, the OSI, RedHat, Debian have appeared to have ignored the copyleft freedoms that the SSPL guarantees.

I think the problem is mostly there. The heads of Mozilla operating in the logic of private corporations (business and profit), with no intelligent direction, jumping from one trend to another (marketing instead of strategy) and making workers and users pay for their inconsequential bets...

PSA to all free/libre/FLOSS software and service advocates:

The state of media and software the world over is in a grave state. Ads, subscriptions, and ads-in-subscriptions degrade more experiences than ever. If there ever was a time to bring alternatives to people's attention, it is now (and there are quite a few good alternatives too).

That said, poor advocacy could arguably be worse than no advocacy at all. @sphakos sums up the issue with bad advocacy in a few words here:
"UGGH! This does not acknowledge my negative experiences, my feelings, or my usage constraints. It immediately jumps into troubleshooting, problem solving, or software architecture.

Please for the love of your fellow human beings, validate people's negative experiences with free software!"

Remember that leaving entrenched systems aren't without cost, even if the destination is a better place. (And read the rest of the thread for even better posts!)

Anyone still remembers the definition or usage of the "flavor" in ?

What I can remember:

  • Distro: .deb (Debian); .rpm (RHeL); etc.
  • Flavor: Ubuntu; Kubuntu; Lubuntu; OpenSuSe; etc.
  • DE: Gnome; KDE; LDE; etc.

I think there's another one but I can't recall.

Today, no one is using "flavor". And "distro" changed in usage to "project name" (like Ubuntu, Mint, Peppermint, and so on).

Or, I'm misremembering things?

Get Plasma, a modern, fully functional, clean, privacy-respecting, non-intrusive operating system now, regardless from where you live and ditch Windows for good.

Edit: the services are disabled by default, but they were still installed with very little to no transparency about them towards the user, alongside all the other stuff that's often unwanted from Brave users (Pocket on Firefox is to blame too, lol.)

Just made a contribution to my preferred political party - I alerted them that I would not contribute through the donation capability of their Nationbuilder-based website. I pointed out NB & some other software dependencies were incompatible with party values. I recommended they add a donation option to their party member site (which is built with ). They sent me bank details, assuring me they'd sort the member site for donations post-election. Will hold them to it.

If it's true that NZ is one of the least corrupt countries in the world., I shudder to think how corrupt other countries must be...

@bananabob I'm not sure I agree - the financial price businesses, orgs, and gov'ts are paying have made each BigTech corp a $trillion entity. A couple have hit $2 trillion in market cap. That is a LOT of skittles that could've been spent far more wisely and have achieved much more in local industries especially if, say gov'ts & orgs were smart enough to collaborate & commission #LibreSoftware rather than accepting proprietary software! @strypey

@craftygardennz even right wing libertarians can have the odd good idea (e.g. ACT and the Greens are big fans of #LibreSoftware, albeit for somewhat different reasons), but it doesn't mean they're worthy of a vote. Sort of like the old stopped watch maxim.

Crikey. Wonder what their 'success metrics' looked like. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/498118/it-upgrade-costs-rotorua-council-about-14-point-9m-more-than-originally-budgeted This seems like part of the same epidemic that we're seeing everywhere else. Gov't bureaucrats buying into the 'off-the-shelf' myth. We need better people who know stuff as the customers. Consultants are seldom without vested interests.

lightweight,
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

I'm starting to hatch a plan where a group of tech savvy #LibreSoftware adherents stage an intervention at #LGNZ (the Local Gov't Agency) & require all council digital tech procurement staff to do a course on how the digital world/business really works (which we will develop) & then they have to reapply for their roles before they can waste another cent of taxpayer $. Because the current crop give absolutely no indication of being competent. We haven't got time for more of this shit.

It's extremely disappointing that all the political parties I've investigated - including my preferred parties, #NZGreens, #TePātiMāori, and #TOP - all use US-owned proprietary software Nationbuilder. (I believe all the other political parties also use it) Politics in Aotearoa NZ needs to happen and be run here in NZ. What's the point if every single step of our political process here is framed and mediated by deeply untrustworthy US corporate interests? Kiss our sovereignty goodbye.

lightweight,
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@strypey I'm trying to explain to people why their entreaties to have #LibreSoftware people change what they provide is like saying "I don't think the water should flow in this flood plain, I think it should flow over there, where it's not flooding my house!" Yeah, it's certainly a legitimate grievance, but the request is pointless & exhibits a lack of understanding about the relevant dynamics. The solution is for the person to learn what a flood plain is & to not build a house there. @sburall

lightweight,
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@strypey the thing I'm trying to get across is that #LibreSoftware devs do what they do for any number of reasons & entreating them to 'make their software easy to switch to' might not be part of it. Unlike proprietary folks after profit, they're seldom motivated to maximise user #s or provide an escape for proprietary exploitation - after all, they're not stuck. The extra effort to create an 'easy onramp' for their Libre app is usually much more complex than just making the app.

@sburall

lightweight, (edited )
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@strypey don't worry, I get it. The issue is that proprietary software that has high investment in UX... is like a Venus Fly Trap - to get as many people stuck to the app as possible, so they can be milked of value. It's seldom (if ever) a mutually beneficial relationship.

Some #LibreSoftware has superb UX, but it's seldom well known because it entirely lacks marketing. What really makes software 'user friendly' is marketing, plain & simple. Few users have any basis for comparison.

lightweight, (edited )
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@strypey earlier in the thread, I explained why I think designers participate less in #LibreSoftware. Software devs can write software without them, albeit often without the benefit of their skill, ergo less usable, whereas designers cannot write software without devs. I also add designers feel a stronger pull to proprietary tools - it's always assumed design is done with the Adobe suite - which suggests a different set of priorities are generally held by designers. @vfrmedia
