@rml Agreed. We are at a crucial, historically pregnant moment. The world saw the merciless brittleness of our socioeconomic order with the pandemic. And we’re seeing the same antihuman fragility exposed in how we have allowed global tech to be structured. #FreeSoftware#LibreSoftware has always been political with a capital P. Now is precisely the time to embrace that fact.
Are there software licenses out there that guarantee to the user the ability to receive updates and improvements to a piece of open source software?
I don't know of any license other than the GPL that provides this guarantee to the user.
I know that I'm more motivated to learn a new tool when it is protected by the GPL because of this guarantee that future versions will also be open source.
When I license my own software, I choose the Affero GPLv3 because it provides this extra guarantee to the users, even if the software serving the user is on a webserver.
Section 5, "Conveying Modified Source Versions", of the Affero GPLv3 sounds very related to this protection.
It sounds to me that anyone is free to distribute modified versions of the software, but to do so, they must also release the source code for the modified version they release, also under the same license.
Your link is an answer to my question. The only other open source license that requires disclosure of modified source code is the Mozilla License. It's still not as strong as the AGPL, which defines distribution as network use.
The term "open source" is too often used to distract from the ethical issue we face as a society. The control that the developers of proprietary software have over their users is unjust. The four freedoms are required for a free society age of information.
Say libre software, say free (as in freedom) software! Don't be afraid to advocate for whats right in a world deprived from the education they need in order to care.
All the memes about #RedHat having control over the #Linux and #libresoftware ecosystem may be turning true. If this whole source code situation continues this way, we may have to transition away from Red Hat technology. I'm not even really sure myself, maybe the year of the #OpenBSD desktop or the year of distros without #systemd is coming sooner than expected.

In another thread on Mastodon, someone has pointed out that "Free and Open Source Software" is almost always misunderstood by non-practitioners as meaning "free of cost software, i.e. freeware, & open source software", where the latter (aka #OSS) has in recent years been undermined in the mainstream by Github, Microsoft, the Linux Foundation, & other corporate interests to mean 'weak' open source licenses like MIT, Apache, & BSD, which do far less to protect the 4 Freedoms, not Copyleft. 1/3
