Researchers at Cornell University have created a lithium battery that can charge in under five minutes, while still delivering a stable performance through repeated “charging and discharging” cycles.
Thanks to Rep. Julia Brownley, Ventura County today received a $12 million federal electrifcation grant, with $7 million of that heading to Thousand Oaks.
The grant will fund EV charging stations, battery storage, related infrastructure, and job training.
This is a win-win-win-win:
It’s good for our climate
It’s good for the growing number of EV users
It’s good for public safety (essential city services need power during emergencies)
It’s good for our economy, creating green jobs
This was a team effort, with many on city staff taking part, along with partners across the county. Kudos all! This will improve people’s lives.
I was hoping that one of our major American auto manufacturers might be able to supplant Tesla as the biggest EV seller in the USA, but it is looking like it could be Hyundai instead. Too bad they're anti-union, but the UAW may make progress on that this year perhaps.
Purchasing a new EV with a 361-mile EPA-rated range for $36,065 is a big deal anyway imo.
USA's largest solar plus battery storage plant comes online in California! This giant is 875 MW solar plus 3.3 GWh storage. Total financing for the project is $1.7 billion, and it's located partly on Department of Defense land.
Both the EU and USA will install 2X more in 2023-2028 compared to their achievements from 2017 to 2022.
But China will install 4X and 5X more than EU & USA respectively!
Costs for li-ion #batteries have fallen dramatically over the last years. In 2014 Tony Seba predicted $50/KWh by 2027. As of today, this looks incorrect. China might hit this milestone already this year. #renewables#energy
Found a Pyne Pod 8500 discarded in the grass during a walk into town yesterday
Surprisingly sophisticated charging circuitry for an item designed to be disposable. No obvious way to open it in order for owners to refill the tank or to swap in a new atomizer module.
If the EU has mandated that all (with a few exceptions) must use USB-C for charging, why is every single digital camera battery a custom design. Why isn’t there a standard that all camera manufacturers have to adhere to.
For instance, there’s no technical difference between a $300 Leica SL battery and the average $30 Sony knock-off.
Batteries are the limiting factor in the lifetime of a digital camera.
'A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has developed a new fuel cell that harvests energy from microbes living in dirt.... the researchers used it to power sensors measuring soil moisture and detecting touch, a capability that could be valuable for tracking passing animals.... Not only did the fuel cell work in both wet and dry conditions, but its power also outlasted similar technologies by 120%.'
Last time we had three days in a row where it stayed below freezing, due to various conditions the Texas grid nearly collapsed. I don’t think the blast coming in this Sunday impacts the entire state, but the forecast for the DFW area is for three days below freezing. Thanks to #solar and #batteries I should be fine. Nonetheless a good reminder to #beprepared. Here’s a recap from 2021.
They're calling these Virtual Power Plants, but I'd prefer labeling them Distributed Power Plants. Regardless, this is more good climate news showing how we've got a lot of people working to help us avoid as much global warming as possible.
China moves to make a huge push for "vehicle-to-grid" charging by 2030, allowing tens of millions of EVs to sell power back to grid operators during peak hours; will set up 50 pilot programs by 2025.
V2G will help China close 100's of coal plants by 2030.
Prices for energy storage are dropping and since our grid cannot/will not be built out as fast as we need in order to reduce emissions as fast as we need to, batteries and distributed microgrids that provide for power generated on-site to be stored by the producer instead of used on the grid are our fastest way to offset more fossil fuel burning.
The starting price of 2hr Megapack commercial energy storage dropped by 2% to only $1,278,860.
Another tweet here in my thread on how 2024 will be the year-of-batteries towards our impending decarbonization.
This is another stationary battery which allows renewable energy generation to provide power through a breezeless night and such, but there's also the good news that VW's new EV was their brand's top selling model in 2023 too for example. #ClimateProgress#ClimateSolutions#Batteries#EVs
I'd like to add another toot on curtailment. When you hear the word curtailment, think #batteries
Sunday, wind power broke the all-time ERCOT record @ 27,515 MW. The previous record stood since May '22. Renewables reached 68% of power demand, just shy of the all time record of 70%. That record likely would've been broken if not for curtailment.
ERCOT has only put 5 GW of storage online. When that's 500 watch out fossil fools! #WeCanDoThis
Are you familiar with biochar and its ability to drawdown carbon dioxide out of our atmosphere and sequester it for centuries?
Well now you are and we should push for the rich people purporting to care to purchase these machines for every USDA community garden that has the room to set one of these pyrolysis units up.
Because of social and mainstream media most people are under the misconception that we are off track in the USA towards transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Yes, we need to go faster, but the technologies and products are available or will be available for every American making above the mean income that owns their own home with a decent roof for PV to achieve net-zero before election day.
"The cathode is not made from the familiar mixture of #lithium and other metals. Instead, the primary ingredient is #zinc, which ranks as the fourth most produced metal in the world.
Eos’s batteries use a #water-based electrolyte (the liquid that moves charge around in a battery) instead of organic solvent."
This is intended to be a #GridBattery.
Dendrite formation is the bane of lithium batteries.
"In the new research, Li and his team stop #dendrites from forming by using micron-sized silicon particles in the anode to constrict the lithiation reaction and facilitate homogeneous plating of a thick layer of #lithium metal."
