Some People Really Are Mosquito Magnets, and They're Stuck That Way

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/some-people-really-are-mosquito-magnets-and-theyre-stuck-that-way/

> Certain compounds in our skin determine how much we attract mosquitoes, new research suggests—and those compounds don’t change much over time

Our beloved Olivia, from 9 years ago. She loved the old laptop, and would use it as a cat-warmer. 🤣

I journeyed to Granby, Quebec to experience the solar eclipse. This was my first full solar eclipse, so I left almost all my gear at home. I just took Eclipse glasses, my smartphone with an app to call out eclipse timings, and my camera.

This picture was the result.

Canon R7, Canon RF 100-400 lens, at F8, 1/400s shutter, ISO 100.

I am delighted with the detail, the sun's corona, the prominences, and more.

My friend took a picture of me as I was crossing. Balancing on floating logs with a backpack took a lot of concentration. This was at the limit of what I could do.

WARNING: freezing cold water is VERY dangerous. The strong reflex to gasp as you plunge in cold water can kill you. Your limbs will stop working within minutes in that cold water. Always have a buddy, warm clothes in a dry bag, a way to make fire, a rescue plan, and know your limits.

Came across a river during my hike. It was pretty, and neat to see the battle between the ice and flowing water.

'Try not to let moose lick your car,' warns Parks Canada

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/dont-let-moose-lick-1.7074587

> Parks Canada is warning drivers not to stop while on highways to let moose lick their cars this winter, as more moose venture down to highways to fuel their salt intake.

ripplesandleaves,
@ripplesandleaves@mastodon.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat You have to ask them nicely. 🤣

But more seriously, apparently people are being asked NOT to stop. Instead, carefully roll on by.

That doesn't help with Moose licking the road though. And by doing so, associating roads with salt.

An emergency brake for the climate: EU advisory board recommends 90%–95% reduction in emissions by 2040

https://phys.org/news/2024-01-emergency-climate-eu-advisory-board.html

> To limit global warming to 1.5°, the EU's Science Advisory Board on Climate Change recommends that Europe reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 90%–95% by 2040 compared to 1990. Fossil fuels should be phased out as quickly as possible.

This is a well done panel show of experts, talking about common electric vehicle myths:

The amount of bullshit spread by oil and gas companies gas risen dramatically. They know the shift has to happen, but they want to delay, so they can maintain lucrative profits just a little longer.

One of my favourite creatures is the sturgeon.

They have been around in the same form for the past 200 million years. They lived when dinosaurs lived! Sturgeon can be 100+ years old, and reach 3+ m (10 ft) long. I find them majestic. So cool to meet one!

I share blueberries, nuts, fish scraps, and sometimes Cheerios with them and they let me take their pictures.

In this photo, they are watching the roofers a couple of doors down.
