Does #BasicIncome make people lazy? Do recipients cease to contribute to society?
Preliminary findings from Irish initiative suggest otherwise @Basic Income Ireland https://zurl.co/3NyE
Published a new article yesterday. This one's in response to Elon Musk talking about "universal high income" as opposed to universal basic income. In short, UBI can be any amount, although there are theoretical and practical limits to consider. #BasicIncome
'Godfather of AI' Geoffrey Hinton has told BBC and UK govt that a #BasicIncome will be needed to offset loss of 'mundane' jobs lost to #AI https://zurl.co/R8cV
End your week with the outstanding news that #BasicIncome has received a unanimous vote in favour from city and county reparations commission in Asheville, North Carolina https://zurl.co/FMj1
@RealJournalism There was a (superficially at least) similar experiment in Vancouver recently, that also came up with positive results. However, on closer examination the Vancouver study had selected recipients particularly likely to make good use of the money, and many subjects of the study had simply disappeared. This is in general an area that would benefit from further research, so experiments like the one in Seattle are very helpful.
Remember that #BasicIncome initiative out of Ireland aimed at supporting artists?
It's apparently been deemed succesful enough to justify an expansion https://zurl.co/iScO
The #BasicIncome movement has the potential to unite many perspectives, and this Conservative defence of a Basic Income is worth a read- not least because poverty is not, as so eloquently posited here, a zero-sum game https://zurl.co/T9dH
New results from another completed guaranteed #basicincome pilot. This one was in Cambridge, MA where 130 people got $500/mo for 18 months. Did they work less? No. They worked MORE.
Recipients went from 36% FT employed to 40%. Those who didn't get it went from 30% to 28%. PT and seasonal employment also grew for those with the basic income.
That isn't unusual. Most of the pilots have shown increased employment.
@asbestos@scottsantens Great point. You can't even talk about universal health care without people grumbling about their money being used to ease someone else's suffering.
