New results from another completed guaranteed #basicincome pilot. This one was in Cambridge, MA where 130 people got $500/mo for 18 months. Did they work less? No. They worked MORE.

Recipients went from 36% FT employed to 40%. Those who didn't get it went from 30% to 28%. PT and seasonal employment also grew for those with the basic income.

That isn't unusual. Most of the pilots have shown increased employment.

So what else was observed?

@scottsantens I often think UBI would create a true labour market. Right now finding and keeping a job is existential, which gives the buyers of labour a massive advantage over the sellers. Take away that advantage and now labour can effectively negotiate a price for their labour that meets their needs and matches the demand for their skill set.

@scottsantens While I'm very much in favour of UBI I'd like to see more work done researching inflationary effects and perhaps counter measures. Making sure everyone's basic needs are met is a realistic and attainable goal, I really hope we can get there some day.

Sadly you could run a pilot and have a 50% increase in employment, a net gain in revenue from more taxes paid, and the Right would still babble on about "free stuff from the government"

@asbestos @scottsantens Great point. You can't even talk about universal health care without people grumbling about their money being used to ease someone else's suffering.

Yeah, that kid with the cancer should have made better choices, what with being born poor and all. Damn freeloaders

They keep saying they want the government to run like a business. Maybe it's time we invest heavily in future returns.

Unless it's guns they're not interested. Even with a 6:1 payout
