My lungs hurt. Feels like back when I still smoked cigarettes, and would get drunk and smoke a whole pack in a day. 😶‍🌫️😮‍💨

I’m assuming it’s related to the fact that I can look out my windows and see smoke haze in the trees, and if I step out the door everything smells like a campfire, and my car is covered in wood ash.

A Hairy Woodpecker visited the bird feeder today.

TIL Hairy & Downy #woodpeckers have almost identical markings, but Downys are smaller, have smaller beaks in relation to their heads, and have speckled feathers on the sides of their tails. Hairys, OTOH, have a less adorable name, larger beaks, and white side feathers on their tails.

"Officials reported no serious injuries, though they did find substantial damage to the interior of the airplane, particularly to several seats next to the door plug. Headrests were gone off of two seats and the seat-back was gone off of one."

Excuse my stupidity, but if the back was gone off of one, doesn't that mean HAD the seat been occupied, the person would've been sucked out of the opening? 😳 #Alaska

“A new study says Alaska’s predator control programs — aimed at boosting moose, caribou and deer populations for hunters — do not work.

The state Division of Wildlife Conservation disputes that.

But the study’s lead author, Sterling Miller, spent two decades at the Division of Wildlife Conservation and says the state’s predator control programs are driven by politics, not science.”

The good news is that Fairbanks is too far north for organized July 4th fireworks. The bad news is that 24 hour daylight is no impediment to people who mostly just want to hear "boom" over and over and over and over again. #Alaska

So disgusting on every level! 😡
"More than 20 endangered sea lions have been found dead in the Copper River Delta this summer, many with gunshot wounds. The National Marine Fisheries Service has now quadrupled the reward for information on the illegal killings to $20,000.

Sadie Wright, a biologist with the agency, said the dead animals were found during surveys of the area east of Cordova. This year, she said, it’s an unusually high number.

“We’ve done this for a number of years,” Wright said. “And this year we’ve found a big spike in the number of dead sea lions on the islands there.”

As of June 2, they’d found seven dead sea lions in the area. Since then, at least 15 more have been reported. Wright said by this time in previous years they’d found about three or four.

Steller Sea Lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. Killing them is illegal."

UPS regularly loses packages to #Alaska, and is seldom faster than USPS Priority Mail, so I find it EXCRUCIATING when corporations ship UPS by default without the option to select the cheaper, more reliable shipping option for my location.

We used to post about this a lot on Alaska twitter, because it's a common experience that companies will just NOT SHIP to Alaska rather than using USPS's cheap and reliable services, so frustrating
