I understand that newspapers need support through subscriptions, but I often worry about about how this makes reliable information a luxury for those with the means to afford it.
Meanwhile misinformation & disinformation are widely accessible & free. #news#journalism
@Sheril That is exactly the problem. The #farright and #rightextremist folks pour billions of money into propaganda so all their "information " is free to read but seriously newspapers and portals have paywalls.
That's another reason why "Conservative" propaganda has such a success.
Attention #journalists. Facebook's blocking of #news adding to dangerous situations in Canada's north.
Saw this post elsewhere. A radio host in Yellowknife "said that most people in #NWT use #Facebook to access information. But Facebook now denies# Canadians the chance to share the news. This lowers the chance for people to learn about about emergencies and evacuation orders, such as the one that’s just come into place for #Yellowknife."
This needs to get into the news to help pressure Facebook to fix this.
@AskPippa Blame it on the government wanting to please the content and copyright mafia with their idiotic link tax.
They bow down to publishers to not get bad press. Weak government.
@dankennedy_nu It's sadly a worldwide phenomenon: Political parties who where conservative become now "Conservative" i.e. right wing fascists waiting to bend whole systems into their favor. Abolishing checks and balancing and assuring they will always remain in power even when the voters are in the minority. And it's always with the scare boost "You whites become the minority".
@VPS_Reports it's fascism. They know they have an absolute loyal base to conduct violence to every target they get from their leaders. This is in no way different anymore to rebel groups wanting to get power via a Putsch without having majorities.
The power of federation. If mastodon.social were to shut down today, I would lose connection to 137 people I follow or who follow me, or 9% of my total connections.
Presumably, many of them would move to another instance, or even another fediverse platform.
I think it’s important that implementations other than #Mastodon continue to be major competitive players on the #Fediverse. I’m getting bad vibes from the Mastodon maintainers. Can’t put my finger on it, but they just lean in the same direction as Silicon Valley techbros. I’m afraid that with enough money they will become techbros.
@drahardja As they do not own the fediverse and there is no lock in effect (especially not if you have your own instance) - I do not see this risk here. Do they already embraced & extend with incompatible extensions?
I'd rather have a sharp look on Meta and bsky when they join the #Fediverse as this could really monopolizing it - but not Mastodon.
@flexghost I remember what the French ambassador in Washington DC commented back in time ...
"I do not have too much time to comment on this, but please be advised that the so called French fries are from Belgium and is a Belgian invention and recipe".
I have so many questions about what just happened with Voyager 2. But let's review:
On August 20, 1977, Voyager 2 was launched from Earth.
In December 1977, it entered the asteroid belt.
In June 1978, its main radio receiver failed. Since then it's been using the backup receiver!
On July 9, 1979, it flew past many of Jupiter's moons, made its closest approach to Jupiter, and took tons of beautiful pictures.
On August 26, 1981 it shot past Saturn and took tons of beautiful pictures.
On August 25, 1989 it shot past Neptune and took tons of beautiful pictures.
On November 5, 2018 it crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space, 120 times farther from the Sun than we are.
On July 18, 2023, it overtook Pioneer 10 and became the second farthest man-made object from the Sun.
3 days later, some idiot sent a command that pointed its high gain antenna 2 degrees away from Earth. HOW EXACTLY DID THIS HAPPEN?
On August 4, 2023, NASA used its most high-powered transmitter to successfully command Voyager 2 to reorient towards Earth, resuming communications. HOW WAS THAT POSSIBLE?
Voyager 2 is now 133 AU away. How can you "shout" across such a distance and attract the attention of someone who is not looking in your direction? That's very far. It takes light about 18 hours to travel that far.
@johncarlosbaez The Voyager's receiver doesn't have the nowadays very strict narrowing frequency limiting circuitry as it is possible today. It is all analog. 2% might sound huge - like the earth is some million kilometers off the view) but the receiver at the top of the dish antenna still catches a bit. If the discriminator is triggered enough to see it as a usable signal it will pass. For the dish it is like the high lit dot has moved a bit away - and you still have some signal around it.
@Alice And? In case you try to pull money out of this bank account via ACH the account holder can dispute it. If it happens too often, you will have a huge problem.
And - acct + routing number is not enough to gain control to the account. It is not something you must keep secret like the SSN.
Many companies have their account numbers printed on their printed mail.
“About a decade ago, #Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” projections of how far owners can drive before needing to recharge, a source told Reuters. The automaker last year became so inundated with driving-range complaints that it created a special team to cancel owners’ service appointments.”
@CAWguy@GottaLaff The cult around Musk exists. It's sufficient to criticize anything about Musk's handling of things and you'll get spammed by Musk appraisals by cult members, "anti woke"-people and - typical for the US - he's super wealthy so he must be an idol to admire.
@GottaLaff@CAWguy Don't forget all those hot air producing "Business coaches" wanting your $$$ for stuff like "Be Alpha! Alpha! Success is a mindset! Your goal must be to be able to chat with Musk! Mindset! Alpha!!".
Perhaps I'm at an age now to completely laugh about this.
in 1992, musician Sinead O'Connor's career virtually ended when she publicly protested the Catholic Church's sexual abuse of children.
Aside from the fact that history quickly proved her right, I'm struck by how utterly dignified and restrained her protest was. She didn't trash the Sistine Chapel. She tore up a photograph of the Pope at the end of a televised set. That's it. It cost her her career.
Thank you for speaking truth to power, and may you finally rest in peace.
@mattblaze It shows how dangerous cults are. Members of a cult will do everything the cult leader orders them to do. They use this power to control countries. And we all allow this by giving some of those cults even tax exemptions when they call themselves "religion" or "church".
