Bumbling through the technosphere. Easily amused.

Messing around with #FOSS, baking #bread, paddling a whitewater #kayak, and #parenting a herd of kids . Sometimes I manage a Hello World without syntax errors in #python.

Professionally, I help to build and run #trains with software and IT stuff.

Middle-aged cishet white guy, trying not to be an asshole about it. Please let me know if I get it wrong.

So the CEO of online ads giant IAB made a pretty… remarkable speech, saying:

"These extremists (referring to privacy advocates) are political opportunists who’ve made it their mission to cripple the advertising industry and eliminate it from the American economy and culture."

And this, friends, is our mission statement RIGHT THERE.

In “Petro-masculinity: Fossil Fuels and Authoritarian Desire” (2018), Cara Daggett explains why, with white men, #climate denial and #misogyny so often go together.

She makes a powerful argument that the patriarchal power structures in our society are deeply entwined with our fossil-fuel based economy.

In case you’re currently looking for a job, a reminder:

Those “requirements” that companies put in their postings - those are just a wishlist.

If the job looks like it fits you, and you meet maybe 50% of the requirements, go for it.

“You should hire me, because… “ - if you can complete this sentence, the role is worth applying for.

It seems that some parents worry about how to explain the existence of gay and trans people to their kids.

It’s trivially easy.

“Sometimes, men love men. Sometimes, women love women. Sometimes, people find out that although they have a man’s body, they’d be happier living as a woman - or the other way around.

All these people deserve to be happy and respected, just like you.”

And that’s really all there is to it.

My ROFL for the day:

The women´s football (soccer) world cup is on. In an interview, one of the German players was asked "so who´s the female Neymar"?

Her reply was "I don´t think there´s a female Neymar. For example, I don´t know any female players who keep laying on the ground for two or three minutes".

🤣🤣🤣

Fellow white cis men, will you join me in a New Year's resolution?

In 2023, let's shut up and listen. (Update: in 2024, too)

Let's make space for other groups to build our shared spaces, on the Fedi and IRL.

Let's trust that when a space works well for BIPOC, for LGBTQ+, for women, then it'll also work well for us.

We've had the mic for long enough. Let the others have a turn at making the decisions.

Elon Musk is a sorry shit, but I’m kinda grateful to him for reminding everyone that critical infrastructure has to be managed by states rather than private companies.

Enjoying this week’s issue of @thecontinent. Besides excellent coverage of current affairs across the African continent, it includes this rather splendid summary of the whole sorry Bankman-Fried saga 😎

OK people, there won´t be a song contest this year.

They cancelled it, because Finland has clearly already won.

Some are curious about my age because of my recent birthday. As an older woman you must understand I'm a bit reticent to share that information. But, what the Hell, I trust you all. 😊

I'm officially I-threw-my-back-out-in-a-goddamn-coughing-fit years old. 😒

Who needs another present when, truly, this virus is the gift that keeps on giving? As if all the phlegm wasn't already enough, right? 🤦‍♀️

@lisamelton They say that above a certain age, if you wake up in the morning, and nothing hurts, then you’ve died overnight

Sorry to hear about the #RedHat layoffs announced yesterday. I hope you’re all doing well.

For anyone impacted, do take a look at https://jobs.siemens.com/careers. Just for the keyword “Linux” alone, there are currently 450+ open positions available at different sites around the world.

Is it just me, or has text editing really gotten worse on the latest #iOS releases?

When I try to move the cursor to a given point in the text, it often selects the entire word. This makes it very fiddly to change eg. just a couple of letters.

Well, looks like I’ll be filtering all #Substack links from here on out.

There are some people there writing interesting stuff. I hope they find a publishing platform that doesn’t choose to enable Nazis.

Only over the last few days did I notice what felt like an increase in advertising in my Fedi timeline.

I’m surprised to say: it doesn’t bother me at all. Quite to the contrary, I actually like it!

Artists promoting their work, showing me cool stuff I might like to buy. A rail nerd with a special ticket offer. People selling used stuff.

I hate spying. But I don’t mind this sort of “here’s what I have, do you want it?” advertising.

Somehow there’d be a lot less heartbreak around if more people realized that relationships aren’t something you have.

A question for people in Paris:

We´ll be on a family vacation in France in the 2nd half of May, and are pondering whether to visit Paris.

Are there any important limitations due to the preparation for the Olympics? Major sights blocked off, or anything like that? Lots of security hassle?

We´ll be travelling with children, so we´re trying to avoid long queues etc.

I’m so proud to be a step parent.

I don’t see it as “less than.”

I don’t see it as second best.

I love my kid.

I know I’m a parent because I made a choice, I stepped up, and I was there no matter what.

It changed my life. It made me a better human. I’m thankful for it every single day.

slothrop,
@slothrop@chaos.social avatar

@Daojoan There’s a German saying that goes

“Vater werden ist nicht schwer, Vater sein dagegen sehr”

“Becoming a father isn’t hard, but being one is”

and I only just realize how much sense that makes.
