    @dansup I've seen like 3 spammy looking accounts and zero (maybe one?) actual spam posts on mastodon in the last 18 months of using it daily.. I'm guessing that mean mastodon IS doing something, and fairly successfully?

    Edit: "seen", not "sent" 😅

    We've got this cheap egg cooker that plays the loudest, most terrifying alarm you've ever heard when it's done cooking. My wife requested that I make it "less aggressive" so I hacked it into the most gentle egg cooker of ALL TIME

    (warning: probably loud)

    Before shot: egg cooker finishing an egg before modification. Jarring alarm goes off, I say "fuck!" After shot: egg cooker finishes. A few moments later, a small mechanical music box next to the cooker starts playing Pachelbel's Canon

    When I think about the security of a computer system, I have a specific scale I rate it on:

    1. The US government can crack it OR the government of China can crack it (equivalent)
    2. The government of Israel can crack it
    3. My friend Kristin could crack it
    4. The government of Russia can crack it
    5. A nation-state not listed above can crack it
    6. A well-qualified single infosec professional could crack it
    7. I could crack it

    Hey! Remember those toots from yesterday of mine? I've got a name now for the phenomenon I've been picking at:

    Weak Induction

    I'm probably not using it correctly in this explanation, but this is when you're looking at something (say an online post) and, because you have a brain which is constantly looking for patterns and motives, you induce things about what the author means.

    But watch out for weak inductions! If what you assert isn't plainly there in the post, you might be on about nothing!

    naught101,
    @naught101@mastodon.social avatar

    @distractedmosfet @TechConnectify perhaps a better version of "assume the reasonable interpretation" is "don't assume the unreasonable interpretation". Leaves a bit more room for staying in a space of unknowing, and make learning easier.

    I wonder if I feel free to write a blog post that I know will anger people because I don't monetize.

    I have ads, but it pays a tiny fraction of the cost of maintaining a website and using MailChimp. People might be surprised at how much my blogging venture costs.

    My discipline, anthropology, is not seen as a “growth" discipline, and departments are being closed down. But the world needs Anthropology and Anthropologists now more than ever!

    Here are my 8 reasons for this:

    1. POSSIBILITIES
      At a time of polycrisis, when the destructive fallouts of capitalist modernity are ever more apparent, anthropology highlights that there are myriad alternative ways of thinking and living; that there is so much to learn from other peoples in the world. 1/n
    naught101,

    @pvonhellermannn @academicchatter

    You reckon the reasons departments are being closed are the same ones you've listed? Unis mostly seem to be heading towards being solely profit making ventures, and most of that stuff just gets in the way..

    little story for tonight.

    while i was goofing around with #globalTalk, I ended up searching for some old Simpsons icons for my classic Macintosh (an LC 475), and stumbled upon an entry on the garden called Banned Simpsons Icons. (Who could resist downloading something with a title like that?)

    They were called the "Banned Simpsons Icons" because Fox once sent the artist - Jeanette Foshee - a cease & desist letter for her uncannily perfect renderings of the copyrighted characters. they planned on suing her for every penny she made ($0.00) on them. this was back in 1995.

    i thought - hell, what a wild story. why don't I get a hold of the artist - jeanette - and find out more about her banned icon set?

    what i stumbled upon broke my heart, and i ended up spending a week digitally preserving what i could find.

    I'm an infertile atheist. In a fit of desperation while doing IVF, I went into a church and promised that if I could have children, I'd have them baptized. I had twins and returned to fulfill my promise because of superstition. I was then told that because they were IVF babies, they had no souls and couldn't be baptized. So, I went back to my original FUCK RELIGION stance. 🙄

    I worked in IT for over 30 years, and people tend to forget the technical details of how you solved problems or implemented clever code hacks. However, they do remember how you made them feel. I am referring to both colleagues and customers. Even a small gesture of writing a compliment or thank you note can be impactful enough to make them remember it. Human emotions are powerful tools. Use them wisely.

    naught101,
    @naught101@mastodon.social avatar

    @nixCraft I know this so well, but remembering it in the moment is often difficult. But it's possible to intentionally be nice later too
