Not enough people realize that the "Turing Test" as originally presented was "can a gay English man in 1945 tell the difference between a chatbot and a femme-coded woman" over a teletype connection.

(Turing was very gay and had a sex-segregated education and then work life: he basically didn't know women and his alienation is palpable. But today's techbros don't have any such excuse, and the emphasis on femme-coded AI is ... telling.)

This is one of the biggest reasons that I am so anti-AI, at least in its current incarnation. All of its promises to make work/life a little easier for people come at the expense of literally burning the world, and we were already doing far too much of that before these tools were released.

@jynersolives My least favorite moment of the game was during phantom liberty when idris said we were going to a fancy party, so I drove all over town to find the perfect dress and accessories, only to be forced to put on a not-fancy lizard skin suit instead.

So, how should I continue my "catching up on the MCU" project? I've watched No Way Home yesterday and seen every movie leading up to it.

@scy I liked the relationships and interactions between Peggy and Jarvis. Papa Stark was also tons of fun in the episodes where he showed up.

However, in general, it seemed like an accurate representation of what a female super-spy would have faced in the old-boy's club in the era of the original James Bond.

a friend told me about two sweet rituals i thought i'd share w u all:

  • every day, go out or open the window where u live, and hang out there for a bit until you hear/see a bird. maybe some days u only hear them, or u end up seeing a squirrel or smth. the idea is that if you bring yourself to be present in a place u think u know well, unexpected things will happen!
  • take more things spontaneously and sometimes arbitrarily to be good omens (see a cool cloud = good omen, leaf fell near u = good omen). this is a practice to both resist the tendency to fixate on things being bad omens (tripping, messin up at work over small things) and shift the idea that the environment is working against u, rather for u

I wish the tech industry didn't make me hate technology so much. In the 1990s I absolutely coveted the #WearableComputers that #SteveMann was creating, and now the #AppleVisionPro is so much better than anyone could have imagined and I absolutely hate everything that it stands for.

@krisfreedain Now that you mention it (or gif reference it) it is weird how there is no asynchronous workplace communication in the #GhostInTheShell universe. People are always talking directly into other people's brains in real time. Slack would actually be an improvement.

Finally watching , and one of the things I really appreciate is how they don't try to build false drama by making everything a time-compressed nail-biting crisis (à la JJ Abrams). Sometimes when there is a failure, they're all like "hold tight up there is space for a few days while we try to send you a replacement part."

    Not sure what's happening. Having a bevy of new problems. Might be long covid, or MCAS, or just ME/CFS flaring badly, don't know. Days of testing strongly suggest it's not a 2nd case of covid but of course this is all one big uncontrolled experiment so who knows.

    I'm mentally in a bad place. I had been getting a bit better so this sudden severe downturn hits hard. There are a lot of tears. Hugs to everyone else out there in the same boat.

    @hollie @chronicillness I just went through weeks of not having the energy to get off the couch most of the day, without testing positive for covid or having any other symptoms (except maybe some sneezing). And since I don't suffer from ME/CSF it was really out of the blue. I guess something is going around? 🤷

    World solar power doubled in the past 18 months. China passed 50% renewables with incredible and unanticipated speed, Europe is down to getting only 17% of its power from fossil fuels, solar has firmly outstripped coal in use and cost, and all signs point to 2023 as peak world carbon emissions, that we've hit the turn of the curve and carbon will now be lower every year.     @adapalmer This is great news, but solar going up doesn't necessarily mean that fossil fuels will go down. Unless we are careful, people will try to put all that cheap new electricity into mining Bitcoin and teaching large language models.
