Car parts you never hear about any more. Not in the US anyway.

Fender skirts Curb feelers Steering knobs Continental kits
Emergency brakes (now it’s a parking brake.) Foot feed. Dimmer switch (used to be on the floor.)
Running board

SpaceLifeForm,

@qurlyjoe

Carburetors
Full size spare tires
User replacable fuel filters
Hanging Dice
Seat covers
8-track players
Shock absorbers
Hand cranked windows
Trunk key
Lockable glovebox
External collapsable antenna
Retractable headlights

I am certain that I have forgotten something.

SpaceLifeForm,

@qurlyjoe

Doh! Wiper blades. No replaceable rubbers anymore.

See what happens when you get old?

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@SpaceLifeForm
Wait. What? I didn’t know that. My car’s only 5 years old and it’s got replaceable blades. Well, aftermarket, but still.

Cigar lighters, lake pipes, 2 and even 3 tone paint jobs, bench seats, over-drives

@bjornqc
Spike antennas and power antennas for the ritzy thunderbirds

Tail fins. For like 3 years, maybe 4, in early ‘60s.

eviljackcarver,

@qurlyjoe Overdrive gear control

@eviljackcarver
Don’t recall overdrives

Four on the floor and three on the stick
The choke

the_etrain,
@the_etrain@beige.party avatar

@qurlyjoe
Three on the tree. Seen that only once.

TheJen,
@TheJen@beige.party avatar

@the_etrain @qurlyjoe

Drove an old Ford truck with 3 on the tree. :)

Used it to pick pears.

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@TheJen @the_etrain
I remember my dad’s old ‘55 studebaker had three on the tree. It may have had a choke, too, not sure about that.

TheJen,
@TheJen@beige.party avatar

@qurlyjoe @the_etrain

I had a choke on mine. Easy to flood the thing if you didn't know what you were doing. :)

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@TheJen @the_etrain
Never had to use one, but I remember hearing about that.

garyrogers,
@garyrogers@mastodon.social avatar

@qurlyjoe I’m sorry, but ‘The Choke’ will always be the Toronto Maple Leafs for me.

@qurlyjoe floor pedal to engage starter, tubed radios with vibrating tube to convert DC to AC, wing windows, bumper jacks, points and rotor, ..., even older cars (early 1950s) had mixture control on dashboard, and even older, very early cars had adjustment for timing on dashboard.

Early airplane engines: they did not have throttles. Instead, the relied on intermittently cutting out the magneto spark, or adjusting timing, as the Wright brothers did.

And chrome fenders, or bumpers.

White wall tires

Rumble seat.

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@SecularJeffrey
Yup, those too.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@wandering.shop avatar

@qurlyjoe @SecularJeffrey @timo21 Well, if white wall tires make a comeback, curb feelers will be close behind, though they would likely be laser powered.

kroltanz,
@kroltanz@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mikemccaffrey @qurlyjoe @SecularJeffrey @timo21 I’m all about the laser-powered curb feelers comeback

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@kroltanz
Pretty soon we’ll be hearing about recalls because the laser powered curb feelers were starting too many fires in the trash and leaves by the curb.

@mikemccaffrey @SecularJeffrey @timo21

@kroltanz@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@qurlyjoe @mikemccaffrey @SecularJeffrey @timo21 there you go, ruining my little fantasy 🤣

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@kroltanz
It’ll be fine. Just a tweak to the laser power module until the number of fires ignited drops below the threshold of public fuck-giving. Maybe a couple rounds to get there.
@mikemccaffrey @SecularJeffrey @timo21

Is a foot feed the accelerator? Most of the others we both knew.

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@jeanettepizzurro
Yeah, or gas pedal. I never heard of a foot feed myself.
