The Natural Landscape Photography Awards is a competition handled unlike most others (to its credit). I always enjoy seeing the results when the winners are announced:

Hope Mountain and Silver Lake after a storm at Silver Lake Provincial Park near Hope, British Columbia, Canada.

@msquebanh I know! That was pretty great to find. I'd just driven through Manning Park in a very long downpour and wanted to get off the highway to stretch my legs. Storm cleared and I made some photographs I still like quite a bit (not always true of photos I made way back in 2010). Shortly after this, the sun came out:

@msquebanh I don't really recall, but probably not. Was likely a weekday, and pouring rain the whole time. I was coming back from Vernon or Kelowna I think. I usually stop at Lightning Lakes for a break but skipped it due to the conditions, if I recall correctly.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh I haven't spent any real time there since I camped at LL in 1995 (it snowed and went down to -12 at night!). I'd imagine it can get more than a bit busy in the warmer months, but was usually heading through in May. Still some snow on the ground at that time.

@TheSaanichDaily I'll have to head down that end of SSI next time! Here I thought for sure that last one was Burgoyne PP heading to Daffodil Point. @msquebanh

My music tastes are all over the place because I just fucking love good #music & I don't care where it comes from or what eras it comes from. If my ears like it, it's cool.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh Absolutely! When people ask what kind of music someone likes they often are expecting only one genre or maybe even just one band/group/singer. It is a fair question, but I am really puzzled by people who only like a very narrow slice of what is out there.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh As do I. Which is why sometimes hitting "shuffle" in my collection can be a bit jarring!

A Great Egret (Ardea alba) catching a small fish in a marsh along Lake St. Lawrence in Ontario, Canada. Photographed from West Woodlands Island in the Parks of the St. Lawrence.

I photographed one of these in British Columbia as well:

A small waterfall on the side of Sumas Mountain in the #FraserValley of #BritishColumbia. I visited this spot because I saw a small trail leading off the side of the road near a creek and was a bit surprised to see 3 nice waterfalls in the area!

@cliffwade I used it a lot and hosted a photography theme there (Mountain Monday). I miss what it was through about half its life, but not what it became. After a bad redesign and an influx of bad spam (both in volume and illegal content), it was clear Google's heart wasn't in actually trying anymore. Mastodon reminds me a bit of early G+, which is nice.

I just learned that there is a serious group of people here who believe posts with “eye contact” need a content warning, and I just can’t even.

I mean.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@CStamp I'd certainly put some stuff behind a a content warning if I posted it (spiders, for example), but one can only do so much. If you can't filter via alt text, then this is even harder as there are limited characters. As I was once told I shouldn't post mountains because people were scared of them (the commenter and others), I think some of this falls into the category of not being able to help everyone all the time. @snarkysteff @stephanie

Barred Owl (Strix varia) fledgling in the midst of a begging call while its sibling looks on. Barred Owl owlets can be fed by parents for months after leaving the nest while they learn to hunt for themselves. Photographed at Campbell Valley Park in Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

I've got a video of these two here for those interested:
