I'm a photographer who lives in Metro #Vancouver, #BritishColumbia, #Canada. My #photography is mostly #naturephotography and #landscapephotography oriented though I'll photograph almost anything (but not usually people).

Here's a recording of #TheMastodonEffect in action on my new server. I tooted a link to my small blog (https://vibyrail.ca), the only thing on the server, and monitored the results. The post wasn't boosted, it's just the impact of posting with a link to the blog. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I am. It's no wonder my tiny shared-server with 2GB of RAM completely dies. This known problem needs to be fixed asap.

The server is an Intel Xeon, 8core with 32GB RAM, and 1TB RAID10.
#Mastodon

A screen recording with audio voice shows me with a compose window open on the top left and top monitoring my server on the bottom. There is a blank command line on the top right. When the post is send it disappears and is replaced by a placeholder image to mask the files. The htop shows activity on the CPU as Mastodon reaches out to the server for the link.

@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@chris I didn't notice a performance issue but I did find 13k lines from Mastodon's user agent in my Sunday server log. Things getting boosted continues the onslaught.

For : Panorama I made last fall at Katzie Marsh in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada. The main mountains in the background are Widgeon Peak (left), Gloomy Peak (middle), and Osprey Mountain (right).

The last for this year is a Barred Owl I managed to photograph in a neighbors yard. The crows were nice enough to alert me that it was sitting there. This one is for @pwc

Another one of my photographs from the Snowy Owl irruption of 2012 here in southern British Columbia. The timing here worked out okay. :)

Two fledgling Barred Owls (Strix varia) snuggling together on a branch. A video at the end of the linked post shows the "melodic" song they emit when begging mom to come back for a food delivery.

Smart toothbrushes got hacked. TOOTHBRUSHES.

Jesus, just because it CAN be a smart device doesn't mean you should USE it.

Every smart device you own is another point of vulnerability in your life.

I have trust issues. I prefer not-smart.

It's always amusing how the Twitter addicts declare "yeah, Mastodon isn't working" — and return to Twitter! Because that's a better place to be, right. JFC.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@alexskunz Are these people who need an algorithm to feed them things or just not getting traction for their brand of bs over here?

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@CStamp Quite true! Weirdly I've found a lot more interaction and better "numbers" here with far far fewer followers. Most of my posts are pretty easy to digest though, relatively. @alexskunz

If you're in the Pacific Northwest or Southwest BC, buckle up for one of the longest atmospheric rivers that weather-watchers have ever seen, over 8,000 miles. The fun begins this week.

It will be wet, wet, motherfucking wet, WET, soaking, soggy, wet, and wet, I think is the prediction this week.

It has flooding-and-otherwise potential, and will probably obliterate the existing snowpack. https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2024/01/one-of-longest-jet-streams-in-memory.html

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff Looks like it is going to be wet but I hope it isn't 2021 AR wet!

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff First one is Sunday so forecasts can be all over the place even for that time frame. Rain is good, I hope none of these cause much actual issues. Filling the aquifer under my house is great. Decimating the snowpack is not great.

For #MountainMonday I have this photograph of Mount Cheam (Lhílheqey) from Agassiz, BC. A nice fall day with the combination of autumn foliage and a bit of fresh snow in the mountains.

For #WildlifeWednesday I have this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) perched on a log at Devonian Harbour Park, near Coal Harbour and Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The building reflection in the pond shows how close to downtown Vancouver this is.

HELLO, DID YOU ORDER SOME FUCK-YOU-UP? BECAUSE SOMEONE DID.

Here's the anticipated snowfall for the south coast of BC from Tuesday to Friday, and the models are getting increasingly inclined to heavy snowfall.

This is about 45 centimetres for VICTORIA by Friday. This is the most recent map model.

Take precautions and if you can work from home, you should! #bcstorm #yyj #bcwx

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff GFS is often a bit drunk in its predictions. Victoria, however, does get those snow events that miss us (in the Fraser Valley) often. You also (hopefully) have less likelihood of freezing rain. I'd rather the snow, honestly! I don't have friendly words to say about freezing rain.

Regardless of what happens in the middle of the week that +8 at the end is going to feel hot!

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff It does seem to be sliding a bit towards the colder forecasts...

(10/10) I just realized I forgot to include the last photo in my top 10 favourites of 2023 series of posts! So last but not least is this small waterfall flowing through moss covered rocks in Whatcom Falls Park in Bellingham, Washington State.

Really serious storm cell as about to hit Vancouver in the next hour, and will take blizzards to the Valley right after.

If you’re out, you should head home. It’s going to be terrible. #bcstorm

Same map at 10pm shows the intense storm cell transitioning into a blizzard cell

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff Oof that looks lively! These very often fizzle before they hit the mainland, especially the southern part where I am but I'll keep an eye on it!

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff Huh, the models I saw people interpreting earlier today had indicated that fizzled. Perhaps it took that personally! :)
