This week for I have the iconic scene of Mount Shuksan and Picture Lake in Washington State. One of the most photographed mountains in the area, and you can see why.

For #WildlifeWednesday - an adult Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) with a chick foraging in the plants along a lake shoreline in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Sandhill Cranes are omnivorous so foods the adults fed the chick likely included invertebrates, insects, seeds, and berries.

A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) standing in the Silverdale Creek Wetlands (Mission, British Columbia) while a Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) looks on.

I made this photograph as a direct result of remembering an old Far Side comic. Do you remember which one? Answer here (April 16th post):

@msquebanh I like how once you think you know what she sounds like the next album is different. Just started listening to the new one recently.

More proof that $s don't mean sense. If you were going to allow a stranger to test drive your car, would you not want to see a driver's license first? And while some kids look older than their age, a 13-yr-old would still look young enough to worry about a teenager behind the wheel.

"...the teen's parents had "no feedback" to share with media." LOL.

"...a total write-off by the insurance company" at least means it's insured.

@CStamp I could be completely wrong about this but considering the city involved I wouldn't be surprised if the story given to explain this was concocted to protect the kid from the worse consequences of taking the car without permission.

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@CStamp I'd heard it was an uncle but who knows. If you can buy a car like that, perhaps the loss of it isn't a big deal.

For #MountainMonday. I thought I'd post this now before the onslaught of real eclipse photos, fake eclipse photos, and AI eclipse photos. This is Mount Baker (Komo Kulshan) in Washington State with a rather nice bit of sunset light on the clouds behind.

(No, I don’t think we are all going to die in the eclipse. So dumb. There will be an 18% eclipse where I live. It’ll get dimmer. Yay. Whatever.)

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@snarkysteff The 90% was quite interesting in 2017? I was lucky enough to see that here. I always just assume clouds will block something like this. :)

Learned a new trick that's apparently an ancient Mexican trick for cooking tamales:

Put river rocks in the steaming water.

This way, as your tamales (or whatever) steams, the clattering of the rocks tells you there's still enough water for the job.

When the rocks stop rattling, you've run out of water and things will burn soon.

I know I'll be throwing some rocks in the dishwasher for this little hack!

michaelrussell,

@snarkysteff Question - does a consumer dishwasher get hot enough to sterilize rocks? Not a question I've pondered before! 😆

Hello - experts. What is up with this - it's very obsessed with my backyard . It's been hitting up this mirror - from early morning & it's still trying to do - I don't know what?

https://youtu.be/DAH_GbAllY4?si=Ysf5YUGv-N0h3gKw

detectives - what is this birdy doing & why?

michaelrussell,
@michaelrussell@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh @CStamp For me it was the Towhees and Robins doing this. I didn't see any with exhaustion but there was certainly a lot of poop all over the mirrors and the side of the car. I had shopping bags on them when I parked at home for a few years but the newer generations seem to be able to ignore them now.

For #MountainMonday - The moon rises over Mount Blanshard from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada.

I wasn't planning this, but apparently others were (back in 2008) as I recall photographers in small groups along the side of the road waiting for the moon to rise. I had no idea what that might be about until it came up over the mountain.
