The Alberta Wildfire Dashboard shows 40 fires right now and 12 were started this year. Meaning 28 are from 2023.

Provincial crews have extinguished 237 fires this year so far. May is here -- I hope the system and crews still have some excess capacity for the summer itself.

These numbers are for areas the province has primary jurisdiction so not national parks or municipalities. It would be GREAT to see the whole province.

Sometimes when you read the reviews of higher prestige Asian food (Japanese / Korean) you get a lot of people going ‘this place isn’t really Japanese / Korean I just heard them speak Chinese’

Which is such a silly thing to say because who made you the judge of someone’s authentic asian-ness?

Also I just sat next to a group of old Korean ladies who’d been speaking Korean this whole time then their friend came and they switched to perfect Mandarin.

Korean Chinese people exist!

For the most part I do not worry much about authenticity — and how can I as even French cuisine is outside my deep experience. In as much as I can learn to cook Italian food from reasonable recipes, I can do that without learning Italian. I guess I consider language an element of culture and not the culture itself.

For me, your example is showing casual racism.

Well, they finally scaled the Y-axis to 21.5 C. I have removed the annual lines for the block of years used to give the mean and 2 sigma lines. Doing this shows how more recent years are creeping above the mean. How much of the planet will be able to grow and harvest food this year?

Alberta wildfires by year to current date of March 2nd. This year is well ahead at 31. Same date in 2023 only had 13.

We have currently 52 active fires meaning by subtraction there are 21 'zombie' fires which have so far survived the winter.

The forecast for the end of the week is again into melting temperatures.

I want to note a fire which lasts over a winter is called a zombie fire. The province is the walking dead of fire control.

I have never tried freeze drying either. If I recall the phase diagram, it would work better at -40 than -10. My problem is handling the wet clothes to do the hanging out. Unless in a big hurry, I do not use the inside dryer and have racks to hang inside.

I recall visit a neighbour as a child and she was furious. Some birds had used her line as a perch and she had to now rewash the same stuff. Bird!!

For those who have not endured a course in thermodynamics:
The cold in Alberta is part of our climate change issues and does not disprove it. Extreme cold is completely consistent.

As you raise the average, you will also increase the spread of the curve. The system becomes less predictable.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Here is a handy guide when you are trying to describe the texture of the ants that you see.

In an exciting new paper the textures of ants are grouped into five main categories for over 11,000 species to better understand how these micro-textures aid in ant survival.

Smooth
Reticulate
Striate (rugulose)
Punctate (dimples)
Tuberous

Well this is weird. Looked over at our cameras and saw a bunch of dust flying. Normally it's clear.

No motion detected on the exterior cameras, and the lights in the garage are on a motion sensor so it's definitely not something large.

This side of the building is uninsulated, so generally no air movement.

lauxmyth,
@lauxmyth@mastodon.online avatar

@chad
A spider built a web above or beside the camera and it gathered some dust. When a bug hit it, the dust flew up close to lens. No big IR signature. My theory.
