For all the white people who say some of these folks “pretend to be racist for money,” please know that there is no such thing. The consequences of the behavior are real and the same, even if one were “pretending,” hence, there is no such thing as pretending.

When the runs dry: Why is freaking out over a tiny Swiss dam

"Water-rich controls Western Europe’s taps — and wants it to stay that way. Its drought-ridden neighbors are getting nervous."

https://www.politico.eu/article/when-the-water-runs-dry-why-france-is-freaking-out-over-a-tiny-swiss-dam/

Reminders:

  1. Switzerland is not part of the EU.
  2. Switzerland will have serious water problems once the glaciers have melted.
justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars A lot of countries outside of Europe already have large-scale desalination to supplement the simple absence of sufficient fresh water.

It's going to have to happen in Europe too, now that 6-month droughts have become a fact of life.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars Spain actually does use it for agriculture already.

For example, there's a plant in Torrevieja producing 240'000 cubic meters a day, half of which goes into irrigation.

There are many smaller plants in operation in Spain, as well as more planned, with varying levels of irrigation use.

Religion really is dying in the Netherlands.

The general trend is that religiosity is more common among old people, who don't manage to entice all of the next generation to stick to their faith.

Note that the graph is about "Are you religious, and if so which one?"

Weekly attendance is a lot lower, at only 18% of those who claim a religion. Catholics specifically have it at only 6%.

Quick Tulip update: Didn’t see her for a few days and started to worry since she getting up in years for an ant. Just spotted her in the lower chamber doing some patrolling around. She’s at least two years old. Still full of life.

Close up of Tulip, a very good looking ant: she has a wide head and six sturdy black legs.

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

justafrog,

@RickiTarr Ever since I got liberated from radio, I just don't know recent popular acts at all.

Well, that was an unexpected learning moment.

justafrog,

@TheBreadmonkey @mentallyalex Well, I always liked having chick peas in a stew because they do leak a fair bit of frothy stuff.

It makes sense.

But I don't think I would have come up with using it as breading glue on my own.

The ant “foot” consists of a tarsal claw with two toes and the several segments above that I suspect are simply… well…floppy. Basically, I’ve seen no evidence ants can wiggle their ankles at will, but rather they seem to adjust the floppiness, or tension of the lower leg. The claws, however, show signs of dexterity, ants can control how sticky the soft pad of their foot is, but also seem to be able to grip and release with their claws. (how exactly are the muscles arranged?)

Another view that includes the segments above which I suspect to be “floppy” the ant leg is often covered in hairs.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Mine is so much shorter:

Enjoy the good times.

People who complain about wild singing so hard in the morning - are not my friends. I'm DELIGHTED about early morning bird songs!

Their bird calls YellTell me - We are happy in our habitat here! It's another day we are alive!

Their early morning bird songs, remind me of the importance of feeling of being able to enjoy another morning, another day, to relish in the fact I'm still alive & able to receive many opportunities that the dead no longer have.

@msquebanh I like some birds much more than others, but the silence of no birds at all is worse than any bird noise ever could be.
